hi
my tt girl ailsa who is just 3 years old , gets a kidney infection after each season , she goes off her food , even gets depressed will not come out of bed , i had her at the vets 2 weeks ago and he gave her 2 injections and a course of antibiotics 2 per day for 5 days , he also gave me extra tablets for if it came back again , well i noticed on friday that the boys were sniffing her and she was very very out of sorts and again would not eat her dinner and was very clingy with me when i did coax her out , so ive given her the antibiotics again , i am going to bring her back to vet this week .
im looking for suggestions of what else to do , she is on cranberry tablets for the last year but they did not prevent kidney infections
would it be an idea to get blood work done
Many Thanks
Ginastarr

Sorry to hear about your girlie. I don't have any suggestion, but do wonder if my girl has the same thing. She finished her season around 2 weeks ago, but for the last week has only nibbled at bits of chicken or treats which I have hand fed her, she wanders to a bowl of food and walks away, she is spending a lot of time in bed and just seems fed up. I took her to the vets as I was worried, but they checked her temp, felt her tummy and had a good look at her and ruled out anything nasty like pyo and said she was perhaps a bit hormonal or was maybe brewing for a phantom. My friend's dog was here yesterday and was very interested in her (he's neutered). I will give the vet a call again tomorrow and see what they say.
Hope you get your girl happier again soon.

maybe asking for a vitamin b12 injection will perk her up. Sounds to me like she is low on b12. Might be worth getting blood test to confirm. But this could take up to a week depending on your vet.

Did your Vet test her urine too? One of my bitches had a nasty UTI that was a nightmare to shift but we had a culture test done and she had E-Coli so after a strong course of different anti-biotics, it went and touch wood, has never returned.
yeah he tested her urine , there was a bit of blood in it , so he gave her 2 jabs and double dose of antibiotics , he gave me another course of antibiotics to give if it came back (which it has) , but i am bringing her back to him on tuesday as dad is away tomorrow and i dont drive , thankfully she is a lot better today ate her dinner with cranberry juice added , and is now cuddled in my mum's arms (which she never does )
update
since i last posted the vet gave another course of antibotics incase she got another kidney infection , well for the last 2 days ailsa has been picky with food , and today my 2 males have been sniffing and trying to mount her , she is not in season only out since october . i really getting worried because this is her 3rd kidney infection since november , im thinking of getting a 2nd opinion and / or getting blood work done
any advice greatly appreciated i am more then a bit worried now
many thanks

I've had a few dogs with kidney infections over the years and I give them apple cider vinegar. It has always worked a treat especially with chronic cases.
oh ill definetly get that , im going to ring vet in the morning and get him to check her out , maybe even do a blood test , its going on too long now and im really worried .

does anyone know if you could give dogs barley water? i had tons of this when i had kidney infection, it really helped

Yes I have used water strained from boiling barley when dogs have had water infections. They dont always drink it readily but I have added it to food as you would to increase fluid intake.
i gave her tea last night and she drank it all ,anything to get her to drink , she's up since 8 this morning and all the others have been drinking water but she has not touched any , does anyone know if the flavoured water for dogs is still available in uk , i remember seeing it advertised about 2 yrs ago

Otterhound - what doseage would you give the apple cider vinegar please?
I would agree with the apple cider vinegar as that worked a treat for one of my bitches with recurrent UTI's. However, I use this as a preventative and would be cautious about using this as the only treatment for an existing UTI.
Very often with UTI's a longer course of antibiotics will be needed to shift the infection. On a few ocassions, my bitch needed a 3 week course. They can be very stubborn to shift :(
I find she used to drink more herself when she had a UTI - I think her own bodies instinct to flush out infection. However, I did used to encourage increased drinking by mixing a little natural yogurt in small amounts of water and giving it to her 2 hourly along with frequent toilet outings (no sooner was she settled down to sleep and I was whipping her out for a pee lol)
I found cranberry useless for my bitch. I did used to give her a herbal remedy which is supposed to ease the urinary tract (from native remedies). I'm not sure if this had any effect but it made me feel as though I was doing something!
hi colliecrew
ive had ailsa on cranberry tablets for about 6 months used the juice before that , and it has made no difference ,this season she has had 3 infections , the vet said it is a stubborn infection , he gave stronger antibiotics and is sending urine sample off to be tested further , she will probably need another course to clear it fully , but is a lot better the last few days .
how often can i give apple cider vinegar and can i give the one id get in health shop
Many Thanks
