Why dont dogs like people holding on to their collar with their hand while your taking them somewhere, mine always fight against it.

Anyone know?

i dont think i would either lol... :-)
neck and throat is very sensitive area for dogs, full of valuable tissue and vascular structures like the jugular etc... i would think that natural instincts take over to protect this area. whenever dogs lions, wolves, tigers etc fight they always go for the neck a) because it has all the important structures in to defeat the other animal, and b) it is more accessable than the underside of the belly

also naturally dogs block other dogs rather than pull them out the way, so it is "backwards" for them...

just throwing in ideas, dont actually know.... stabbing in the dark

mine dont fight against it if i need to hold their collar, they get excited! :) as i only seem to hold their collar if answering the door, where they get to say hello to some one! :) all my dogs have training collars that are 3/4 leather and 1/4 chain, so i dont actually restrain them when holding the chain part unless they pull forward, and most of the time when at home they dont wear their collars.

In general dogs do not like to be physically forced to do things, some may not protest, others will.

I have conditioned my dog that holding his collar means calmness (using treats) and that he is to stay still. So now, if I grab his collar, he knows it's not a bad thing (so I can hold his collar while we are walking along or if greeting a person etc.) BUT if I were to try to force him to do something whilst I held his collar he would fight against me. If  I were to gently guide/steer him with it, he would follow.

If your dog is fighting against you guiding it with the collar, it could be that you only ever do that when shutting the dog away/moving it away from somthing good etc. So allthoguh you physically aren't forcing the dog, it has learnt a negative association due to the consequence of being guided by the collar.
