my friend on another forum posted this about her dog.  I don't know much about it but i wondered if anybody here did?

My baby had a really bad turn on Sunday - from being perfectly normal she suddenly started having full body spasms and became very wobbly and unsteady on her feet. She was shaking like crazy and couldn't stand properly.

I raced her to the emergency vet, where they kept her in all day for tests. When I went back for her on Sunday evening the vet said she thinks the most likely explanation is that her glucose levels got too low and that clinically there's nothing wrong with her. They gave me a tube of liquid glucose, asked me to withhold food from 7pm last night and take her back for 9am today.

Since I got her home on Sunday she's been fine - no further reccurrence. But as I was getting her into the car this morning to head off to the vets, she started shaking and spasming again. I managed to get some glucose onto her gums and into her mouth, then held her on my lap all the way to the vets.

By the time we got there she was ok, a little subdued maybe but other than that, back to normal. The vet did more blood tests and now I have to wait for the results. We're back home and she has demolished half a tin of food, she's now asleep next on the sofa.

Assuming that low glucose is the problem (which it does seem to be, although there could be other causes i.e epilepsy  ) I'm wondering how is best to deal with it. I can't be with her 24 hrs a day and to be honest I'm terrified that if I go out and leave her and she has another episode, I'll come back and it'll be too late to do anything to help her. I know this is a bit 'drama queen' but she's always been totally fit and healthy - this has really shaken me up.

Does anyone here have experience of a pet with a glucose problem? Is it easy to manage? Is it just 'one of those things' that's not really a biggie that just needs me to keep an eye on it? Sorry, I'm probably over-reacting, but some reassurances would be great!

But hypoglycemia is known as a problem in some toy breeds, although I've never seen it.  I always advise my new puppy owners that they should never drop to one meal a day for small tummies.

Is your dog fed little and often?  And is it a toy breed?

This can also ahppen to any breed if they ahve been overdoing thigns and nto eaten, especially young dogs.

I have a bitch who suffers from Exercise induced collapse syndrome . When she has been running around for long periods playing she comes over all wobbly , her eyes glaze over , she shakes but we think she is unaware of this and tries to carry on I get her on the floor and soak her feet in cool water and give her drops of fluid until it passes .We have had her tested for AI and every other test but this is the result EICS it is most common in Labs and shepherds ,I have only ever seen it during the summer months and have only ever had three attacks she is 5yrs...  so I have to keep an eye on her . It may have nothing to do with your friends dog but thought I would mention it.
