At what age do you all allow your  pups to free run.

I have 5month old  GR pup and  i dont allow her to run free. I was thinking 7months old would be soon enough.
Other peoples thoughts on this please.

I don't restrict free running.

I don't restrict it either. It's formal exercise where the pup has no choice but to follow such as on a lead, or if you walk and it has to follow, you need to watch.

As soon as they have had all their jags

As soon as they've finished their injections and can go out in public places. I need to teach recall as soon as possible, and that can only be done properly off the lead when they're very young. Obviously they're not allowed to run madly for hours, but 5 or 10 minutes offlead freedom to go at their own pace every walk is fine.

Well i never restricted free running to any of my dogs before this one,but after losing one of my dogs last year of HD at 3yrs old i have become very cautious of her limbs not over doing it.
I am sure i have read that pups should have resticted exercise as pups.
I have a very fast other goldie and that bothers me to....pup chasing her to fast.

I don't restrict free running, just don't take them for long walks. When a pup is free running it can stop for a rest when it wants to. It can't if it is on a lead.

Yes - about 5 minutes exercise per month of age. Your five-month old could easily cope with two 15 minute walks, some of which was offlead.

Take them out separately.

OK i will let her off for a while at a time now thankyou.

We do walk most days on the moor as not far from home...and she walks 30minutes now.

My nearly 17 week old pup has free running.  We drive to the field and she has about 15 - 20 minutes off lead - she doesn't go mad but potters around.  If we come across other dogs and she plays with them then I will cut the walk short so she doesn't overdo it.

She does also have formal lead walking to learn to walk to heel when out and about.

I have a vet friend who specialises in orthopaedics, when I asked him about exercise for a pup, he told me that free running was essential for the joints, etc to form properly. His basic advice was everything in moderation, but the one thing to be very careful of was on lead road walking.

I would think only on lead walks will not allow her to use all her muscles as she would when running off lead at different speeds, turning etc...
Can't be very good for healthy development.
I would however walk your older dog separately if she is very speedy etc. to avoid accidents when the two leap about.

Thanks to you all for your advice,i feel like a beginner, ive only had GRs for 35yrs.
I am going to do what i have done with all my others from tomorrow as i realize im being to cautious now.
I was just worried after loss last year with our other goldie....almost blaiming myself.

Thanks again i needed you all to tell me this,my hubby has been telling me for a long while.
