Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / chicken leg bones

I have been very successfully feeding raw to my 14 month old flattie for over 6 months but always cut off the legs from the raw chicken as I worry that they are too 'hard' for his teeth. I wonder if I'm being altogether too cautious about this. I know that 'weight bearing' bones are not a good idea but wonder if this also applies to chickens, which are small and young when killed.
Also, I have chickened out (lol) of giving him lamb rib bones as twice he has got a chunk wedged across the top of his mouth. I've got it out without too much trouble, just minor panic, but I am always reading that these are a favourite with people who feed raw. What is the 'trick' of feeding these successfully?

Its up to you what you feed (within reason as it must be balanced) but all mine are fed all types of bones including my latest addition baby Rott, who was weaned on raw meat n wings and we continued when she came to us at 8 weeks. She has lamb ribs about 3 times a week with no problems altho she does eat them fast so I give her space from the others so she knows she can take her time.

Does he gulp them down and not chew them properly? Is he the only dog at home, does he feel he needs to eat them quickly so another dog doesnt take them?
Chicken bones are not hard, they are bendy when they are raw.  I feed all the carcuss and necks too.  If you are worried about him not getting the bone content, you could always feed raw minced chicken as this has a high bone content.

If it were me I would try to be a little braver! :-)

We get a lot of meat offcuts and bones from a butcher and frequently there are chicken legs in my dogs' dinner -that is when the dinner isn't just big cattle bones or chicken carcasses. :) Cattle bones they can work at for hours, chicken legs vanish in about two chews.

He's the only dog so no need to rush - he's just typical gundog i.e. greedy!
His diet is pretty balanced - he gets whole rabbit quite often and a whole selection of minces and offal. I'm not worried about balance, just that he isn't getting a wide enough range of actual bone, though I'm waiting for a delivery from DAF of turkey and duck necks.

Sounds like he is getting a good variety, to be honest more dogs seem to have problems with necks (some barfers don't feed them atall) I give them to my two adults GSD's but not to my Rotty pup as she swollows them whole!
Like I said before, you can 'top up' with bone content in minced chicken but your variety sounds good. :-)
