Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Season a month early!!!
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 11.01.10 10:34 UTC
Hi.
My girl had her first litter last year. 3 pups from Toy Breed, normal whelping and feeding and did very well. Mum bounced back into shapeand  health.
She had a season right on time following her pups in August...is very healthy and happy. She has come into season again now a month earlier than due. I was hoping to breed her again this year and then miss a full year, but now Im not sure what to do. Do I have to leave a full year between litters, if I dont, will the kennel club register them? The vet has checked her over and said she is in great shape and very healthy.

Any advice would be great.  Thanks.

The KC will still register there is no rule as to how long you have to leave it in-between litters.  There is nothing to stop a bitch being bred on consecutive seasons, as much as many of us wish there were unless under special circumstances, so the litter you wish for will be registered. :-)

The KC only has a 12 month rule for licensed breeders.

Thankyou for your reply Carrington.
If we do breed this time, then her pups(if we get any!!) are going to be the middle of march time.
I would never breed season after season..thats definitly not right!!

Many Thanks again.

I have toy breeds, and have registered less than a year apart.

One of my girls had 2 pups end of Jan one year, and beginning of Jan the second year.  So just under the 12 months.  Like you, my vet was happy for her to have another litter.  As she only has two pups, he felt that, given her condition, and having small litters, there was no reason to say no.

She had a season in between, but just went less than the 6 months.

Hi
Many thanks for all the advice.
We have decided to breed her this time.
I have found a lovely stud dog...found him last Oct. All health tests etc have been done..same as our girl. I just wanted to check and see what other people thought and take our decision from there.
We take her to the stud tomorrow..so fingers crossed!!

Many Thanks again:)

Forgot to mention in last reply...
with regards to this possible litter we have a waiting list of 7 people..I just hope she doesnt carry that many!!

Sorry Guys I always understood you could only ever register 1 litter within 1 year.  It seems I was very wrong, is it then just consecutive seasons that can't be registered??  Or have I completely lost the plot?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 11.01.10 19:48 UTC
The 12-month limit on litter registrations only applies to licenced (ie commercial) breeders. Unlicenced breeders (which most are) have no restrictions other than the age of the bitch and an uper limit of 6 litters in her lifetime.

Not lost the plot as MarianneB has already posted it is only licensed breeders who are not allowed to breed a bitch twice within 12 months.

Licensed breeders are those who councils deem to be breeding commercially for profit, I think it is more than 5 litters a year, or 3 brooding bitches, (someone will correct that if wrong) but can differ council to council and have to have premises inspected and live within the rules set out by the council inspectors. Hobby breeders which is what most of us come under, :-) do not need to be licensed and are allowed to breed consecutively under the KC rules,  right or wrong, (sometimes there are reasons to do it but often not) and thankfully most hobby breeders do not abuse this, but it is also why the KC have the 6 litter lifetime rule to protect bitches from any unscrupulous hobby breeders.

Beat me to it JG :-)

Thank you, I am quite shocked to be honest!

Can i just ask one thing.... Licensed breeders under the council, would this be people who have registered as a breeder and pay taxes on their litters legally and Hobby breeders would not be registered under the council and would not pay income tax from the litters....and is it legal not to pay taxes??? I'm confused not accusing!!! Many thanks x

All incomes (or not) from dog breeding need to be declared, hobby and licensed breeders alike, anything earned is taxable, but it will depend on how much was profit as with all things you need to keep accounts either yourself or via an accountant if there is anything worth taxing afterwards then the tax office will be after it, usually there isn't. It is always important to keep records.  If people do not declare it only takes a phone call if suspected breeding is going on and the tax office will be knocking on the door.

Basically any money, from whatever source, that takes your annual income over the tax threshold, is taxable. Income from selling puppies, even if it's your only litter, should be added to your income from work and taxed accordingly.

i keep records of EVERY thing i buy , and at the end of pups going ive always NEVER made a profit thats is enough to be taxable ,im always at the flipin vets lol now they make alot of money out me :) lol

I apologise if Im wrong, but I hope these comments are not aimed at me. I am a hobby breeder..but I have carefully chosen the stud dog for my girl. I keep records of everything I buy..right down to dog food..shampoo...brushes..beds...Everything..including anything from the vets. I am not out to make a profit from my dog...in fact last year my girl and pups cost me more !!!
I have informed my council that I have one breeding bitch and asked if I needed anyone to come and check my premises or if I needed a lisence...I was told no as she was my only bitch. My girl is better looked after than my teenage daughter! I dont make enough money for it to be taxed along side my OH pay or to make a profit, I have already checked out everything as I didnt want to do anything illegal.

I think the question was general.

This link shows what the Tax office would be looking at: http://www.bengraftongreatdanes.me.uk/TAX.HTM

The Licensing requirement is something totally separate from Income Tax issues.  Anyone breeding five or more litters in any 12 month period must have a Licence from the Local Authority, and additionally anyone they deem to be breeding as a business.
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 12.01.10 18:45 UTC
Thankyou for that Brainless..very helpful and interesting.
If I decide to keep a pup in the future then I will contact the council etc again for a review of the situation.
