My  10 yr old Papillon was diagnosed with a mammary tumour yesterday.  She is having the lump removed on Monday. I am very worried about the anaesthetic,  even though the vet has assured me the risk is small. I hope somebody who has had the same exprience can give me some reassurance.

Very pleased that your girl came through the op ok. Was there any recurrence of the tumour? my next worry if the op goes ok, will be if the tumour is malignant. The vet will be sending a sample for biopsy.   Apparently 50% of tumours are  benign, so fingers crossed.

My first Elkhound bitches results came back malignant from a lump, a lump came back in same place about 5 years later so the whole gland was removed this time, and she lived to 13 1/2 and did not die with anything related to the malignant tumour.

Thank you for telling me about your Elkhound. That has  made me fill a bit more optimistic.

Mammary tumours as you know may be benign, but even if not surgery with good margins is pretty curative.

My mother in laws dog had a mamary tumour removed many years ago. She was absolutely fine following the surgery and went on to live until she was about 16.

No experience of mammary tumours, but I have had anaesthetic on dogs as small as 3lbs with no adverse reactions.  Todays GA's are so good.

Thanks to all who replied to my message.  I do feel a bit less anxious now and will let you know how she is after op on Monday.

Hi my oldest Golden had a mammory tumour removed at age 9 and a half, with a mammory strip and spey, no problems she did very well and is still going strong had her 12th birthday on 19 December.  The test results showed that it WAS malignant but at an early stage and no problems since then.  My dad's Collie at 12 and a half has just had a mammory lump removed, no test results but she came through the op very well and no problems since.  Good luck

My  Papillon is now back home safe and sound after having her op this morning.  she is very happy to be back and is not suffering any side effects, in fact you wouldn`t know she`d  had anything done. Have an appt to see the vet on Wednesday for check up and discuss if any else needs to be done. Hopefully everything will be ok.

One of my girls had a lump removed last week and vet did think it looked as though it could be something nasty - very hard in places when removing it  Still waiting for results due to bad weather I suppose.  Her lump came up suddenly and was oozing ughy fluid.  Antibiotics did help initially but it was still very evident after 3 weeks so I gave the go ahead to have it removed.  She had a chest x-ray first which did show minor bronchial changes!  She was spayed at the same time.
I just want to know what we're dealing with now, so I can be prepared as I have no previous experience of tumours etc.
My girl recovered amazingly well - in fact I have to keep reminding myself she has stitches in.  No need for a collar etc.
