Can anybody help?

Rambo decided to chase a squirrel on Saturday which resulted in a huge gash to his rear hind leg. The vet has stitched him up and bandaged the whole of his leg and told us to keep it 100% dry! Can anybody recommend a waterproof boot that covers most of the leg and not just the paw? We're using plastic food bags at the minute and they're not that easy to secure to a wriggling staffi!!

Any advise would be appreciated.

My current vet sends us home with an old fluids bag with some tape at the top to secure it, if one of the dogs has a bandaged foot. This seems to be pretty successful. I've also used rubber gloves over a bandage - you just have to be careful it isn't too snug a fit or it ends up pulling the bandage down. The trouble with plastic bags is that they don't last very long before they get worn through. I do seem to have had a number of wounded feet on my crew!

If not waterproof in itself, it will make keeping on the plastic bags etc a lot easier..... :D

Rubble bags and duct tape!   The heavy plastic type that you can buy from B & Q for about £5 for 3 or so (blue, I think) - slice through the bottom and cut a piece large enough to go round the bandage and secure with duct tape.

Fluid bags have my vote they are very hardwearing and can do quite a few walks. The litre bags would cover  most of his leg and would be fine in this cold and frosty weather.

I use human porelle dry socks. I love them myself for walking as they are completely waterproof but discovered they're also great for keeping bandages dry. They are breathable, hard wearing and waterproof - I fix them round the leg with vet wrap. I've got one cut down sock for the collies that has survived 6 or 7 cut paws and a full sock for Tchi that has been used through a couple of wounds too.

Thank you so much for the replies. My Mum is on a mission now to get fluid bags from work, In the meantime we are using an improvised boot made from a kids £1 poncho! My Mum has cut it and shaped it to fit his leg but it is a bit too big. Will do for now though till she comes home with the fluid bags.

I just need to stop him smashing his buster collar off now! He destroyed one this morning.

The fluid bags is a fab idea!

Im in the vet wrap - couple of thick sandwich bags and layers of brown parcel tape catergory aswell :) Not 100% waterproof but can withstand quite a lot of walking without soaking straight through.
