Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / My poor girl has lost her only puppy, i am so upset

Hi All,

Well its been a horrible few months for me and we mated our girl of our other breed to a different male from her previous stud, we kept a puppy from that mating 2 years ago and wanted another from Amber but with a different sire this time.

Matings went well and i was sure she was pregnant but with only a few puppies this time round which was just fine with me, well she started early stages of labour bang on time yesterday and slept on and off through the night, then this morning she lost a lot of blood.

To cut a long day short my girl ended up needing a c-section, just one little girl but she was already dead :(  Vet thinks she only died a day or so ago, but there was no signs of a problem until this morning.

I am so upset for her as she has been through so much today and now is left with no babies either, The one little girl would have been staying here too if she had made it. I am hoping she wont be too upset and go looking for puppies she doesnt have.

A horrible end to a really bad run of things, i must say though all i could think about was Amber during the c-section, i was terrified i would lose her on the table so to have her home with me tonight means everything to me and is of course what matters most, but a very sad day all round.

What can I say Mandy?  I can't believe what rotten luck you have had this year.  So very, very sorry for you.

Nothing I can say will make it better for you, but I feel so much for you.  Sending you some of my strength to help you cope.

Oh my god I am so sorry. I cant imagine what you are going through but know your girl will get the best care and love from you.

I hope she doesnt fret too much for her baby and wish her a speedy recovery.

My love to you both.

Wish you good luck for 2010.

I really wish things had worked out differently for you. Its so very sad that you couldn't have had the one little girl :( Lets hope for a speedy recovery for mum and I hope she doesn't mope around too much. Its awful watching them do that I know.

I'm ready to draw a line under 2009 breeding as well :( Heres to a better 2010 for all concerned.

I'm really sorry Many. I have had a bitch lose an entire litter and it was heartbreaking. The good news is they DO get over it, the first week or so is the worst. Plenty of attention worked for us. At one point I didn't think she'd ever be the same then suddenly she turned a corner and went back to normal.

Thanks everyone, i am pleased to say amber is really well today and is just enjoying being more spoilt than normal! She is getting lots of attention and doesnt seem to be missing her pup as yet so hopefully as she didnt actually give birth to any puppies at all she wont go looking for them.

The only thing i would appreciate advise on is her milk as it is in and quite heavy already today, i have never had a bitch lose her litter so am hoping the milk will dry up as it it not being used or should i ask my vet for something?

Thanks again and i really hope we can try again in a year or so and i may just get my little girl next time, it would be a final attempt so if not then it is just not meant to be.

Reduce her food intake and increase her exercise - as much as you can so soon after her operation. :)

Would you consider letting her be a foster mother.
- By MandyC [gb] Date 01.01.10 20:33 UTC
i would yes, but i am not sure she would mother other pups to be honest

Oh Mandy, what a terrible end to 2009 you have had.  I wish you all the best for 2010 and hope as many of the issues from 2009 as possible are resolved and your dogs have long pain free lives.  ((((hugs))))

Hi,

Amber is a little quiet today so am off to my vet in a minute to collect some AB's just to be on the safe side.

I wanted to ask if anyone had any thoughts on why all this may of happened as my vet said when he opened her up that due to the amount of muck and very thick blood in her uterus that something definately wasnt right with the pregnancy. I feel that maybe she concieved more than one puppy and lost/reabsorbed some?

Any ideas and i would like to give it a year and try one last time for a puppy from her, with the same stud. I was also thinking of covering her with AB's for the matings next time.

Or do you think it is just one of those things that may never ever happen again?

If i do try again i know i will worry the whole time, i have a good year to think things over and see how i feel when the time comes.

Amber has been doing really well with no pining or upset until yesterday when she seemed to panting alot, i have got a course of AB's just to be on the safe side incase anything is brewing but this morning she going behind the settee, i think she thinks she is still going to give birth bless her. She has been picky with her food too.

I feel so sad for her and very helpless as all i can do is give her loads of love and attention, i cant give her her baby back :(

I am hoping once her stiches are out and she can get back to her man (not the stud we used) she will be much happier as they adore each other and hate being apart.
