Taiko only had a couple of solid accidents indoors, he seem to know the solid were best done outside (phew!),but peeing....we're talking floodgates.:) He was excellent at first and then it varied week to week.We put paper near the back door and he would pee there as well as everywhere else!I tried using the Johnsons puppy trainer spray, which made no difference at all.We just had to perservere taking him outside alot and going OTT with praise everytime he did go outside. He's just turned 5 months and I'd say te househas been dry for approx 3 weeks, this week he has started going to the back door when he needs to go,even at the relatives houses.I only wish he'd learn to cock his leg instead of peeing like a girl :D

Willis is 3 months and is fully house trained, but it has been hard work and a LOT of cleaning!! He went out solid-wise, but had no control over his bladder and peed wherever - without even stopping to concentrate. Once he started getting a bit more bladder control though it clicked with him straight away... and we literally put him out when he woke up, after eating, and after playing (most important time) and he got it. He's doesn't even do it at night, he wakes us up at 7:30 to go out.

Mind you, with him being a Great Dane, every time I hear the sound of running water I have to resist the urge to shout "OUTSIDE!"... :)

thank's guy's ,
I remembererd from other dogs ive had that its just a case of when you catch them you place them where they are ment to go , put them there after food/sleep/play etc...but as its been a long time i wondered if id remembered rightly or not!!
Our eventual aim is that Ella will toilet in the street during walks and not the garden ( there will be plenty of walks! and i will carry my pooper scooper!) so iwasnt really sure the best way to start.I guess getting her to go on paper is the first hurdle..then move the paper closer to where i want it ( garden for now ) then when she starts asking for the garden hey presto ! then garden trips will be replaced by walks as she becomes old enough...
Sound ok ?? it's been a long time !

Knowing nothing about dogs, when I was first presented with a puppy to housebreak for my mother, I asked my colleagues if they knew what to do. One, whose parents bred dogs for a living, told me what to do. I did it, and it worked for that male puppy. Since then, there have been two more puppies, one female, one male, that I've needed to housebreak for my mother and again, this method worked. Literally, all three puppies never had an accident inside, not once.

Method: After EVERY meal, immediately take the puppy outside to the spot you want it to go. (Take it out the same door each time too.) Put the puppy down at the spot and tell it to go. Stand there and wait a few minutes. Surprisingly, most of the time the puppy will go. Brag on it profusely after it goes, and play with it awhile. Then if you are going inside, bring the puppy inside too, through the same door. If the puppy does not go, say nothing (don't fuss, don't brag either).
Do the same thing first thing in the morning, right before bedtime and immediately after EVERY nap. And if by chance the puppy begins to circle and sniff the floor, take it immediately outside to the spot you want. Do not use newspaper on the floor. Do not crate the puppy. If, by chance, the puppy has an accident, do not scold it, just put the puppy out following the same method and tell it to go, etc.

Anyway, this is what my colleague told me to do. I could hardly believe that this would work, but to my pleasant surprise, it did.

Each puppy fairly quickly learned that when it needed to go, it was to go to the door and signal it needed out. It would be let out to do its business, then it would come back to the door to come back inside, and would be let inside. And there were never any accidents in the house. I really swear by this method.

Well with both my dogs (honey is nearly 2 and merlin is 7 months) I have from day 1 had them both doing both poo's and wee's outside and i can honestly say i have only had a hand full of accidents and that is down to me not remembering they need to go toilet lol .

here is how i have done it .

I have a small area at my back door where i can shut it off and let my dogs go out with out worry of straying ( and also b4 injections it was safe from infection)... if you have a secure back garden and you are pretty sure no other dogs or cats are about or any other animals that could carry disease then i would dsay that is safe!
I let them out for the toilet every half hour when first getting them home and i watch carfully for thier signs ;) and when they are doing a wee or a poo i say "Be quick" pause for 2 seconds "be quick" and continue until they are done and as soon as they are done (no delay at all) i give them most almightly fuss and praise so they are wagging well to let you know they understand they have been good :D
I continue this every half hour for the first two weeks and then gradualy increase the time between. also let me add at this point we have gravel where my dogs go toilet and this is much easier to clean up mess and it seems the dogs prefer it for toilet :) saves on yellow grass!

If every time you say "be quick" when they go it wont take long for them to catch on that they dont go toilet unless you say it....and it also works a treat when you are out for the day with the dogs and traveling long distance as you can stop for toilet break with your dog and know if you say the magic word they will go straight away :) saves bundles of time ...and also if your take your dog to the vets and the vet asks for a sample you can also impliment it again outside the vets and it will save you a lot of hasstle firstly trying to get them to go when your about and then catching it in a sample bottle ... oh and also a return trip ...this way you can do it all at the same time :)

It does work and if you start it from the minute you get them home for the first time then they will catch on a lot quicker !

1 more tip my dogs always at least want a wee after eating so as soon as they finish eating they go straight out ! + i always take them out right b4 bed time the only handfull of accidents that i have had is throught the night when the pupps are very young .... and it has been easier with my 7 month old to stop than my 2 year old as my 7 month old sleeps in a crate and when we first got him i had him in the crete for periods during the day so i could always see him and if i ever caught him going toilet in there then i would scare him with a strong NO and it only took a few times for him to catch that too, and since he has not messed during the night in his crete he waits till morning and as soon as my partners alarm sounds he knows it is toilet time and barks like mad ...which is also cool cause my partner is then never in danger of over sleeping lol :)...it also means you can have you lie in on weekends cause no alarm sounding then no dog thinking its toilet time :D

Please try it for your self and let me know how you get on .....

ohh one more point for effectivness "always use the same tone for this command ya know like say it high pitched or something so it is different from your normal talk so they know you are talking to them " :D

best of luck jo x x x x x x x

I would agree with that - but I wouldn't carry the puppy - let it walk and thereby discover it's own way to the 'exit' and into the garden - then you don't have to teach it to go to the back door as a seperate excercise...
