Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch panting alot at night 4weeks after whelp
- By Chelcd [gb] Date 27.12.09 20:36 UTC
Hi. My bitch has started panting at night for last 3-4 night. It is quiete excessive for about 20mins at the time then stops for a while but breathing is still quiete fast. I heard this could be signs of heartworm/ anemia/ infection. During the day she is her normal self, running, playing, eating and drinking, panting slightly.  She has always prefered to be cool and prefers the outdoors.   She is of to vets tomorrow but I'm just wondering if anyone had any ideas what could be causing this and anything to worry about?

do you use a heat lamp for the pups? Maybe your bitch wants to be with her pups but finds the heat lamp too hot?

No I don't have heat lamp but she spends most her time outside in our fields before having pups (her choice. obviously comes in at night) maybe the central nheating being on since pups were born is actually making her hot. ATM she is playing football with a reletive and other dog so surely can't be serious?

sounds like she may be doing to much? her body needs alot of rest still if she is feeding her pups alot? ive notest that this girl still is sleeping alot and pups are coming up to 4weeks old she feeds them 3times aday but has 8 to feed ,and she pants for awhile after feeding them.

She feeds thm around 3x aday but she insists on playing. I'd I try to limit her she stresses big time. She's not always on the go though lol

Hi njust quick update. My OH did a DIY haircut on my bitch last night and she spent the night without panting and tonight is sounding good too! Btw she is a breed that doesn't need cutting but we normally do her early spring and summer because she does get hot then but not normally in winter. Espically in this weather but she defo seems alot happier.

Thanks!! As frequent users of the site prolly aware that I am a worrier and think the worst before figuring out what else it could be. She seems alot happier now! She's now short haired and I'm in wolly jumpers hat and scarf and thinking "surely she la cold" but she seems highly content with her new (if slighlty scruffy) look. Lol
