My 3+ yrs spayed bitch Sheltie is passing blood in her poo, although now this evening it has become what looks like just blood.

She had 2 loose poo's yesterday which resulted in her having to have shower down around her knickers.
She seemed bright enough this morning and has been for her walks but as the day has progressed the poo's have got worse and as I said now just seems to be blood.

My 2 youngest Shelties are both in season and there has been a lot of 'keeping clean' and the older one does a lot of this, I thought this may have upset her stomach but now I wonder if she has 'irratative colitis' which she had 2 years ago.

OH thinks she just 'eaten something' and I should give her a day or so, I'm more inclined to get to the vets in the morning.

She's been starved today.

Any thought's?

is it like jelly blood poo? could be a sign of stress especially if your other girls are in season. if its just bloody poo and not really jelly like then sounds like colitis again. i dont know what i'd do about vet.... if it were me id probably take her in morning. but im a worrier, others i know wouldnt

I don't think it's stress due to the other girls as they're both on second season and she was fine last time, although I suppose it's possible, and come to think of it she's fanatical about keeping them clean whereas she wasn't last time.

We've just had another garden visit and she need another clean down as she has blood all over her knickers and trousers, she's now very quiet and is panting a little.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of poo now just more blood but it did start off yesterday with the jelly stage.

I'm going to keep an eye on her and see how things are in the morning.

oh dear I would be at the vets sooner ..or at least give them a call for advice .

Have you changed her diet recently ? does she have a rash on her belly?

I don't want to be a worry wart, but I had a bitch with bloody, jelly poo earlier this year.  I was worried sick, and some folk on here will remember my worry.  She was not expected to survive and was on a drip for days.

I wouldn't be hanging around to see if it gets better.

any news?
- By Pinky Date 30.12.09 15:52 UTC
She's been starved since the morning of the 28th and just encouraged to drink, mind you she's not been interested in eating so it's not been difficult.

I did ring the vets and they said to starve her and see how she is today.

I think she's on the mend now, we've not had any poo or blood all day, she doesn't look so sorry for herself like she did yesterday and she's back to being lively.

I'm going to give her a very small amount of boiled fish this evening and see how she does on that.

Hi - can understand your worry - have a look at the thread "Bedlington Terrier with Colitis" that is about my nearly 12 yr old dog who has been passing blood and mucous.  People have been really kind and posted a lot of really helpful comments.

We have found that White fish (Coley / cod ) and small cut boiled potatoes have really hit the spot and he seems much happier with 3 or 4 small meals a day.

Hope your doggie settles down soon

She had a small meal of boiled white fish at about 4ish today, all seems good, still no poo's and no more blood.

The more I watch her the more I wonder if the fact that my younger girls are in season is the cause of her upset.

This time round she is fanatical about cleaning, particularly on one of the younger bitches.

I'll have a look at the thread you've mentioned, all ideas and info is always useful :)

Thats good that she has had something to eat - I know how worrying it is when they are poorly - its quite shocking when you see blood and goo coming out of them.

We have had my dog's allergy results and all clear so we think it was a passing dose of Colitis - he is on fish and rice now for a few weeks to see if he keeps settled then we will look at other foods.

There are some brilliant and caring people on this forum with some great advice so you are getting advice from a good place.

Love to your doggie

Anna and Barney the Bedlington
