My b/c bitch is hopefully 5 weeks into her 1st pregnancy.  When I was stroking her tummy this morning I noticed she only has 9 teats and it's a middle one that is missing, has anybody come accross this before?  I suppose it will only matter if she were to have a large litter.

2 of my girls both have only 8 teats as the front 2 are inverted and dont function, both girls reared a litter of 9 puppies with no problems, you may just have to shuffle them around if there is more than 9 :)

I have had two bitches with just 9 nipples, even more missing as opposed to non functioning isn't uncommon. 

Some breeds have more than the 10 but often non functioning extras.

Varies from bitch to bitch, and certainly no uncommon.  I've got a bitch with one extra, but I also have bitches missing a nipple or two.  Not a problem.

Every single one of my girls has always had 9!

Most of my Bitches have had 9 with no problem when feeding.

Some women have more than 2 - there was a time when were killed as witches.

Thank you everybody I didn't realize it was such a common thing, just when you think you've discovered something extraordinary you find out you are only ordinary after all, hey ho story of my life!

My girl has 9, the two top ones are very small and have not been used to now, she has three on the one side and four on the other.

1 my girls has 10 and 1 thats tiny next to a large nipple but no pups ever sucked it lol it does look funny tho!

One of my bitches has 9 but one of her back ones has no duct which I never worked out till I saw a puppy getting very frustrated while suckling on it!! LOL!

She has had litters of 8 and 9 and managed fine.
