- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.12.09 12:35 UTC
pups are nearly 3weeks old and mum just dont want to feed them ? im thinking her milk has almost gone as shes not eating much and not drinking much! she runs when i ask her to get in with them ? ive done all the cutting nails every other day!....their teeth are coming though but arnt very sharp yet so its not that! im giving 4 meals aday and they woof (sorry lol) it down and then i ask mum to go in to give them a drink ,she runs :( ....so the thing is im going to give 5 meals and inbetween give milk (goats milk room temp) and try and get mum to feed at least 3 times aday ? do you think thats ok for 3week old pups?

thanks x

I wouldn't force the issue.  Just ask her to lie down twice a day and at 3 weeks, they'll be fine on 5 meals a day with goats milk in between. :)
Maybe she be more happy to spend time with them if they don't try to drink all the time.

if mum has no milk left I  would top them up with a bottle morning and night for the next few days left then as westcoast suggests 5 meals a day and lapping milk from a bowl. I am sure then mum would be much happier to be with them as they will leave her alone or just maybe have a comfort suck.

if they are lapping then I wouldnt be worrying WL I thought they were not  getting fluids I  never gave bottle in the night  when bottle feeding  in the later stages such as this.

If they are on solids they get enough water from the food

WL my girl got I had tp coax her in with a biscuit!!!  By 3 1/2 weeks she didnt want to stay with them through the night and that is when I got back into my bed :-)  They would have a late feed from her 12-1 am and that seen them through until the morning.  I made sure they had water through the night.  My girl was happier at this stage to lay on the floor in the livingroom and feed them than the whelping box.

Can you put a piece of Vetbed on the floor wherever she's happy and get her to lie on that?  Then put the pups on there and let them suckle making a big fuss of her or feeding her titbits?

She is probably finding them overwhelming.

My Tula (now gone to the bridge) was like this with her first litter,s eh loved puppies, but once they got to the teeth stage found ti just all too much, she wanted in with them on the one hand but just found them descending on her hard to cope with and you could see her steeling herself to go in with them, which being a very natural Mum she did but wasn't enjoying it.  With her next litter it was different,s eh had grown up a lot and learnt that she could tell the pups off if they got too rough and really enjoyed her puppies.

Can't remember how big this litter is, but have you thought of getting her to lie down and putting on two or three pups at a time so the feeding isn't so frenzied.
