If the dog ate the rat it would, it is why I won't use poison.

Has a blood transfusion been considered, do you have another large dog that could be a donor.  If not vets often have a list of people who will allow their dogs to act as donors.

The first time a dog gets blood it doesn't have to be type specific any dogs blood will do.

just got back from seeing the bergie.... he looks the same as yest, so pleased with that.... took some of his own food to tempt him with, he ate some and have left the rest for him... took a comb too and gave him a lovely brush... he seemed so much better after his pampering session... red blood cells low again, so have to wait for them to rejuvinate before he can come home.

blood transfusion has been mentioned butt hey hoping red blood cells will rejuvinate themselves.
- By suejaw Date 20.12.09 20:17 UTC
Seems good news, lets hope that his red blood count goes up pretty quickly for him to come home.
The photo in your Avatar is that your boy when he was little? If not have to say he is a cutey after seeing a close up of the shot in DW this week
- By Tanya1989 [ir] Date 20.12.09 21:02 UTC

- By suejaw Date 20.12.09 22:21 UTC
Yup, picked up a copy today and its on the same page as Jane Lilley's page.
- By Tanya1989 [ir] Date 20.12.09 22:23 UTC
oooh i'll be out to get it tomorrow... had no idea lol...thanks for that!

most modern poisons require a build up,unless it had eaten a fair amount of poison over a period,it really shouldnt affect it. Likewise most modern poisons in domestic use shouldnt have a secondary affect, in the chain either, unless you are a raptor (bird) where the metabolism and digestive mechanics make it rather  different proposition.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.12.09 09:05 UTC
That is interesting, as my biggest fear is that if I use poison it could kill one of the dogs, a visiting cat or hedgehog etc.

That's not the opinion of the veterinary poisons advice unit.

same here, naturally the vets rung the poisons unit for further advice

>  the rat died on our garden

That's what I hate about poison - it doesn't matter how careful the person is that lays the poison, the rats will crawl soemwhere else to die.

Far better to take a couple of decent terriers and catch the little blighters  - just not so politically correct nowadays :(
- By suejaw Date 21.12.09 13:41 UTC
Really hope that he pulls through..
Is there a specialist that your boy can be referred to rather than stay at your vets? Not sure if he is well enough to move but the specialist could come to your vets to assess him..
Just wish that our previous vets did this for Bentley, not sure if it would of made any difference, but still its worth a thought.

You can now buy rat poison that dosnt harm other animals. After having a dog with a bleeding problem after catching a poisoned rat we now use eradibate rat killer.

Personally Id sue for his vet fees this is realloy crass stupidity, we warn the whole neighbourhood if the pest control officer sets poison in our garden.

I do hope you have a happy Christmas & MCCarthy comes home well.
- By dexter [gb] Date 21.12.09 15:39 UTC

he is a fab looking dog so happy as well after all he has been through .  I am sure your visits are helping  too.
Hope he is home for christmas but then as long as he gets well no matter how long it takes is more important ..thinking of you both.

i have just seen this thread and read it all.heres hoping your gorgeous boy makes a speedy recovery, see the video and he is one hansome lad, looked v happy to see his mummy!!

i also would be going spare about the neighbours putting rat poison down,i get on really well with my neighbours either side and they will always knock and ask if even a simple plant spray theyre using is safe for the dogs ect.and neither of them have dogs!
i would be looking at asking them to pay the vet fees,no it doesnt make you a person who dont like paying out..... cos hes already there.this was probably and accident but an accident that could and most definatly should have been prevented.why should you be paying out because of your neighbour?if nothing eles it will simply make them think twice about doing it again, money usually does motivate people.

on the most important note i shall be saying a little pryer for your baby tonight.xxx
i do wish him well.

getting a solicitor to write a letter i think.... that way i cant be done for beating her to a pulp. £1600 vets bill! my insurance company are going to love me
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.12.09 19:29 UTC

>getting a solicitor to write a letter i think.... that way i cant be done for beating her to a pulp.

I think you'd be better relying on their goodwill rather than getting all legal. If the poison was placed on their land, and your dog couldn't get to it directly without going on their land, then they've done nothing illegal. People placing poison (such as the council) aren't responsible for where the victims (in this case the rat) end up.
