I saw a red poodle today a very nice colour, are there many breeders about as i have never seen this colour before?

i dont know of any breeders of red poodles sorry.

i was once told by a poodle breeder these are not breed standard and are often one of those advertised as ' rare '

Reds are mentioned in the KC breed standard. So maybe not common, but allowed - even under 'all solid colours' if not mentioned by name.

Reds are a proper recognized colour.  There are just not that many of them around.  Its the mismarks (the 'breeders' call them particolour, harlequin, tuxedo etc) that are not recognized and should not be encouraged. Red is a lovely colour.  :)

Have sent you a link on how to find them

My two poodles are dark apricot in colour and the breeder I bought them from has indeed got red poodles, my two have a red parent and a white parent which is why they are quite dark in colour. When I bought them the breeder showed me all 4 of the parents so I can verify that there was a red bitch and a red dog as well as a white bitch and a white dog. This breeder is Kennel Club registered and lives in Shaftesbury Dorset. She also shows at Crufts.

Yes Sylvia in Dorset breeds reds and has done for about 12 years or so.

They sound pretty - I like the apricots (is this the same as champagne?) but have never seen a red.

If you go on the  UK Poodles website and click on Breeders it lists  breeders with the colours they have in the different sizes .

I have red, apricots and blacks but my preference is for the red. They look stunning when the sun,s shinning and always turn heads.

I would say my two are darker in colour than champagne but they are certainly a very pretty colour, when I am out walking with them I often get people remarking what a pretty colour they are.

i would love a red poodle.i think theyre lovely.
i was warned away from a red poodle being told they are head strong and snappy.and as it turned out i fell in love with the pup i saw so i forgot all about colour but has anyone eles heard of this?

tamara I heard reds can be highly strung, & the most stable are blacks. Dont know how true this is.

Its true to a point if you want to make a sweeping generalization.  The gene pool in the minority colours is obviously not as large as blacks and you do get some breeders who will just mate anything for sake of it regardless of temperament or structure, so the chances of having temperament problems are higher if breeders aren't careful.  As part time groomer and an owner of a minority colour (as well as black) I personally have found it to be true the colours (in mins and toys) generally are a bit more difficult but not all of them, some of them have lovely poodle natures same as some blacks can be horrible.  If someone asked me which to get as a family dog I would say black although I myself would go white :)
