Hi, My Large breed had her litter last week. Tonight I have noticed that one of the pups seems quite bloated with quite a hard to touch tummy. Any advice on how I can deal with this please.... Thanks

Did you Panacur the bitch during pregnancy?

I think you should ring your Vet pronto.

I wouldn't be leaving this to chance, your breed is at an increased risk of Bloat, so the Vet is the best person to ask, even though it is out of hours.

Good Luck.

This certainly crossed my mind, but, at less than a week old - is this likely?

Thanks all, I did phone the vet, I was waiting for a call back which I have now received, she told me to rub the anus with warm wet cotton wool to see if the puppy passes a poo!!!

I did this and a couple of mins later we had a result followed by a rather large fart!! (Sorry, wind to be more polite) :)  Dont know why I did not do this before ringing the vet, i suppose that I always expect the worst when nearly always its a simple remedy!!
Vet said trapped wind can be a problem at times, but to repeat this three or four times through the night if needed.

Pup is now much more active again and feeding back on the teat.

Sorry but im an old worry bag!!

Well, better an old worry bag than the other!  :-)

Glad the pup is improving.

you could give a drop of gripe water and pop pup on your shoulder as you would a baby and gently pat pups  back to prevent a build up of wind. Some puppies gulp when feeding and take in a lot of air. I had one a few years ago.

That's bloat............. I think this puppy needs watching incase this happens again in the future.

When this one is older I would (if he were mine) be adding a little Infacol to his drinking water to keep him belching regularly.
