Really strange thing last night Jake our BC usually stays in the garden for a while in the evening rain or shine (or snow). Last night OH put them out for a pee and only one came in, he went round the garden and it took 20 mins to get Jake in. When he went to put him in his crate he broke out again and went back into the garden before he could lock him in. He spent another 10 mins calling him and came into me in a huff saying he would leave him out!!
I got up stuck on a coat and grabbed my whistle called and called and eventually he came, I locked him in the compound then had to grab his collar to pull him in! In all the time we have had him since a baby he has never done this? he even sleeps in his crate door open when we are watching tv. I could not see anything in the garden like a cat or a hedgehog but he was really upset by something!

Did you have snow? Thor - our 12 year old aussie (auto-immune + arthritis sufferer) normally just "poodles" around the garden when the girls go out and doesn't ask to go out on his own any more.
Last night and this morning he is INSISTING on being out in the snow :D :D :D.
My OH has just told him he's nothing but a Big Kid :D

they can be so funny sometimes, although in this cold weather it's not a lot of fun trying to get you dog back in.
maybe he could smell or hear something you couldn't.lets hope he doesn't do it again tonight.

My old girl was side-ways surfing along the snow at 30mph.......up her nose, in her eyes...she was loving it!!
The most obedient dog on earth wouldn't come when she was called...she was on the planet SNOW!!
No not then but we did that night, I couldnt hear anything but he was so rattled being dragged in was not a thing we had ever to do with him, he is usually in, with two small biscuits and not a peep!
The only time my dog will really not want to come in, is if he has an impending stomach upset. Long before I realise that hes got an upset on the way (normally caused by sneakily eating horse poo or cow poo :() he will dawdle around the garden for ages. Its almost as if he knows, I need to go to the toilet, really dont want to do it inside, but not sure if Im going to need to go right this moment, but when I need to go, I wont get any warning!
Does anyone elses dog charge about in the snow munching up mouthfuls as they go? I try to discourage it with toys but two of them (who are toy obsessed!) will drop their toy for a quick munch!
I was curious as one website seemed to suggest it was indicative of a physical problem or the onset of canine dementia!!
I know several snow munchers, all various ages. I thought this was quite natural, now I'm worried!!

Seems perfectly normal to me.
I wouldn't worry Saw - two of mine who are the worst culprits are now 10 and 8 so I would have thought any physical probs would have shown itself in that time lol

mine were both doing it today but my boy burped and threw up loads of water. Ice cold snow on the belly was too much of a shock to the system for him.

maybe he could smell a fox or a in season bitch !!

That is odd indeed. Was he actually afraid to come back in the house or was he anxious about something in the garden? Usually when my Meg has been frightened by something she can't wait to get back in again. However if there is a cat about then she is on the prowl around the garden and won't come back in - at least until she has a good woof at whatever she percieves to be lurking. Sounds more like your Jake has associated some fear with coming back into the house - You can analyse all you like but you may never find what it is. Hope he is OK tonight - I would be taking him round the garden on a lead if I were you - to watch him - with a couple of hot water bottles tucked into your coat!
He obviously had his eyes or nose on something. Dogs will be dogs! :-D It could be anything from a fox, hedgehog, rat, cat, even a frog, or even some nice smelling roots if in a digging mood, but you can bet your life it was something.
Dogs usually have a very good reason for not wanting to come in, even if we don't think so, something excited him. :-D
