No, not what you were thinking--just a giant thank you to whoever it was that recommended leaving the TV on when my dogs are left home alone. My son was extremely sceptical to put it politely, but couldn't believe it when he came home today to find three chilled out dogs sat sleeping on the sofa instead of the usual mayhem du jour and crazy barking! God only knows what they've been getting on daytime TV but they are much happier. Thanks again to you all for the great idea.

apparently our British dogs can watch Tv here but poor dogs in the US can't as the screen goes to fast for them to see a picture !
My Dad years ago kept the TV on for the dogs to keep them company :-) so I've done the same.

Loki gets very concerned at the vet programmes ....and as for the BBC1 advert with the dogs going round the bending course & through the flaming hoop - well!!

She loves watching wildlife programmes too - and as for Snow Buddies ....she watches that intently - its entertainment to watch her watching in & getting involved ....whining and barking at just the right spots!

I've seen our oldest dog jump up at the screen and try to 'dig' out the animal on the screen before now :-).

As the owner of a cross between two worky sheepdog breeds, mine doesn't really watch the TV, but gets very animated when sheepdog trials are on - he loves hearing the whistling! Same as when we travel by train - he likes the guard blowing his whistle.

I'm so sorry as I know I'm going to come across as a right kill joy here, but I don't ever leave a tv on as they are a fire hazard (or could be).
I know of one person whose tv caught fire when she was out - how about leaving the radio on instead (you can  use batteries?).

I know not everyone will agree with me, but I've a "thing" about electrical safety :( .

I used to leave mine on until I really thought about it :)

Just my thoughts only, and meant kindly, not to annoy.

I have always left TV on for mine. Just a habbit i got into. Ive never had any problems with leaving them and have never come back to a wrecked house or one thats on fire.

Whether this has anything to do with the TV being on i dont know. . . . .probably not.

There is just as much chance of a TV catching fire when your in the house as when you are not. All appliances that are left plugged in are a fire hazzard.

they've probably been watching jeremy kyle  and died of boredom lol :-)

they've probably been watching jeremy kyle  and died of boredom lol    Hey, I like Jeremy Kyle!! lol

Actually very many kennels (both rescue and guide dogs) as well as many stables, leave an electric radio on for the animals so I can't see that a TV is any more dangerous.  I know that any electrical appliance that is plugged in is a potential fire hazard but it really isn't realistic to go around unplugging every fridge, clock, bedside lamp etc, every time you leave the house

thanks Lindsay, it's a good point--I guess a radio is now on someone's Christmas present list since I don't have one!

My dogs love the TV - Although as I have DDB's I do have to clean it regularly as they are always running up to the screen and sticking their slobbery faces onto it, can be quite annoying when you're trying to watch something, they are so big they practically block the whole picture!!

When I was growing up we had a cross breed and she used to adore it when the snooker was on - She'd have her paws up on the screen trying to get to the balls!!

I tend to leave the TV on for Leah, though she does sometimes go and lie in the kitchen so maybe she gets bored watching daytime TV lol :) I would prefer to leave a radio on but I can't remember where I put it when I moved!!

My aunt leaves BBCR4 on for her cats when they are out......

Pickle like one man and his dog and woods at the collies. But with midsommer murders how can anyone not be thrilled with daytime tv. Horse and country is probably a fave though.

I leave a radio on for mine.  I would love to leave the tv on as it would be more company for them.
Unfortunately my smaller shih-tzu goes mad when animals come on the tv so don't think the neighbours would be too happy.
I have left the shopping channel on in the past and they have been sound asleep when I have returned. I think I would be too if i was left watching that for a couple of hours.
