No I feed raw chicken wings and they keep teeth clean. But I used to descale and brush all dogs teeth that came into the grooming parlour, even when the owners said they couldn't! :)
Yes I brush teeth on 5 Frenchies, haven't attempted the old folk, it's jolly hard work, they seem to spend more time with their teeth clamped on the brush! but do enjoy the taste of the dog toothpaste.
i brush mine only a few times a week with chicken toothpaste they all adore it, was mainly for them to get use to their mouths being touched as one didn't like a judge checking her teeth lol
Raw wings, necks and lamb bones do it for me. Regularly check their teeth and any small amount of plaque I see I pick off with my nails. Very compliant dogs so its easy.
Not really an issue for us due to raw feeding, but I do them once every 10 days with cotton gauze and hatchwells tooth powder. Can wrap the gauze around my finger so alot less precision needed than a brush.
A lot of Elkhounds seem to think it a personal affront to have their teeth looked at, but you are boss and must cheerfully insist, a bit of bribery and an upbeat attitude work wonders.
I never clean mine, they regularly get meaty bones, marrow bones and Cow hooves to keep teeth in clean condition.
Bones do the brushing here too. I pick any plaque left with my nails. For some weird reason this makes my dog sneeze, funny little thing she is!
Used to brush my old dogs teeth as hers seemed to get "dirty" pretty quickly and the gums would get irritated, brushing seemed to work and keep her mounth healthy.
I brush my 2 poodles teeth every day just before bedtime with a baby tooth brush and dog tooth paste. I started this as soon as the adult teeth came through and it has definately been worth it. My Vet remarks how clean their teeth are when I visit. My Parents had toy poodles when I was young and they had to have their teeth cleaned by the vet sometimes as they didn't get their teeth brushed regularly and also had to have teeth removed which is why I brush my 2 every day without fail and they are so used to it now the younger one Pepe even lifts his lip in readiness lol.
i have never done any of mine , they are on dry food with raw tripe and chew bones etc and logs out of the basket even the oldie has pearly whites, although i dont think they would mind if i did .
