Sony consistently get good reports up against the big guns like Canon and Nikon. I've had several over the years and been really pleased with them.
It really does depend what you want to do, what size you're comfortable with, whether you want to have the option of extra lenses etc. Also, are you a "pull it out of my handbag and get snapping" type of photographer or rather more considered?
This
camera site is quite a good one for general advice. You could do worse than buy any one of the Camera magazines for in depth reviews and comparisons but nothing beats just getting your hands on one to see what you like. Most high street shops are only as good as the person serving, so look around until you find someone you like to help you understand what is available. Once you've chosen a camera you can always shop around for best prices. Good luck, there are some good deals to be had in the run up to Christmas
