I have just realised that although I know most of my neighbours to chat to I don't know their names therefor my Christmas cards have been posted to:

Scooby and Family
Jack and Family
Bertie and Family

You get the idea- filled with shame...

sounds very sensible to me. I have problems remembering people's names, or where we've met, but I never seen to have this difficulty with their dogs! Not sure the owners take this as flattering though...

When I was in England I always walked my dogs with quite a large group of people and I mostly only ever knew them as Sam's mum, Daisy's dad, etc.  I used to put (ie) Sam and family on a card and it didn't seem at all odd to me.

Haha this made me laugh! We are all dog people rather than people people :-D

Yep, if I get asked if I know so and so, I always say: Have they a dog? My Oh asks: What car do they drive?

It all comes down to priorities ;).

It's good to know that those of us who come on this forum all have our priorities right then Otterhound.

I don't think there's anything wrong with this, it's a good way to get to know them :-)

Personally I know all my neighbours well, but when my brother moved last year he got cards from everyone in his new square - signed from Jenny & Bert at no 50 etc ... this seems common practice there and I think is a great idea.

just me then?

(i dont think ive lived anywhere which has your brothers system)

ive always viewed xmas cards as a very meaningful to me and the people i send them to.

therefore, i only give them to my nearest and dearest.
and they aren't packaged cheap boxed ones, we make our own or buy special.

my view is if i just give them to loads of people, from unknown strangers to far off acquaintances or barely known relations or to every colleague in the building, then it devalues the cards that have real meaning.

its a principle i learnt from school, when their was a fashion for every pupil to buy boxes of cheapo cards and hand them out to each other.
it got so ridiculous that they started handing out cards with only the phrase merry xmas penned in, leaving each other to add their own names!

clearly a status thing, as in i got more cards than you, thus im more popular.

The OP does know the people - just doesn't know their names!

But yes, it's quite common for Christmas cards to sent to people who've moved into the neighbourhood since the last Christmas, as a sort of "welcome to the area" gesture. :-)

I send cards to my neighbours... and they ALL send cards to us and the DOGS.
It never ceases to amaze me how many varities of Xmas card I get with a spotty on it.. I think the neighbours,( only 10) buy a box between them just for us LOL

thats what i wrote about in my post though, ie, your neighbours whom you would chat to from time to time but dont really know that well, as in dont know their names, counts as acquaintances.

wouldnt say its common everywhere though'. ive enever heard of this nor lived in any nehgbourhood where it was done.

I speak to them every week and have since I moved in- I am rubbish with names though and it reaches a point you can no longer ask- I do however know and remember the name of every dog I have met even if only once!!
