My 16 week old Rotty baby has sore eyes, she has had increased amounts of sleep over the last few day but today her left eye is half open and is red and a little swollen.  Her other eye is a bit mucky but not too bad.  Because the breed suffers with Enropian problems I just wondered if anyone else has experience with similar.  Maybe I am worrying too much and it could be conjuntivitis, highly contagious tho so wondered why my other 2 sheps have not picked it up.  We have the vets tomorrow evening.

entropian (sp) usually presents itself by causing the dog to blink a lot.(knew a dane with it) increased amounts of sleep suggest infection so sounds like conjunctivitis.... try bathing it with cooled tea bags 3 -4 times for the next couple of days, if no better off to the vets for a check up, maybe ABs are needed

thanks Tanya, will try that with the tea bags, we have an appointment tomorrow eve anyway.  With the history of problems my other dogs have, I am probably worrying too much.

I had similar probs with my rott boy at that age and his eyes are still quite runny but the vet said it was def conjunctivitis rather than entropian.  When teething starts they can often get eye infections.

She is the most wonderful puppy, we all adore her so much.  I hope its a straightforward case and she doesnt have to have any eye ops. When I first got her at (8 weeks) her eyes were a bit gooie after a week or so then it cleared up and when I went to the vets for jabs there was nothing to show him.  She hasn't showed any signs of teething yet but it should be anyday now. Sounds like conjuntivitis, poor thing! Keep bathing the eye, you can use cold tea or water (boiled) Make sure you use a clean cotton wool pad on each eye!

Came down to her this morning and the one that was half shut yest is open now but the brown of her eye has a blueness to it - now I am worried.

One of my pups had these symptoms and it turned out to be Distichiasis. It was diagnosed when he was about 10 weeks (before he had gone to his new home so he wasn't insured) but the lady that had chosen him was a veterinary nurse so she still wanted to take him as she gets all her treatment done where she works so cost is minimal. He has to have the extra lashes plucked until he's stopped growing at about 18 months or so and then he will have cryosurgery.

It can be quite pricey to sort out if it is this - Your insurance should cover it though.

I know this sounds daft but check her ears...For some reason when my Rotts have gooey eyes their ears usually need a good clear out.

She needs to see a vet. The blueing could be caused from lots of different things from simple trauma from itching the eye to infections/diseases, there is no point tyring to home-diagnose though, even simple untreated eye problems can lead to impairment/loss of eyesight (not trying to be a scaremonger) so it's best to get things checked out.

Masifflower: Like I said in my original post, we have an appointment with the vet today.  I just wondered if anyone had any ideas, was not trying to home diagnose, just worrying thats all.

Ears checked daily as part of our handling routine and they are clean and debri free - thanks for your reply

Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know) it's probably something simple, just always better to play it safe and have the vet check them out :)

Please note sometimes infection can cause the lids to swell(or the fact dog might rub them) and this can cause the lids to turn.
So if the vet says there is infection that is caused by enropian make sure you get rid the infection and then look again.
My mum took a 2 year old dog to a vet because of eye infection and was scared death as the vet told her the dog has entropian and must be operated as soon as! Luckily her breeder stepped in and told my mum to get rid the infection first, it would be pretty rare for a dog at 2 years (and never had problems before) suddenly develop a pretty bad entropian! Sure enough she was fine after the antibiotics.

Back from the vets after a extensive eye examination - ulcer clear and definatley not entropian.  My vet was convinced it is conjuntivitis with the cornea inflamed, luckily, another vet there who is specialising in eyes took a second look and confirmed it too.  Usual conjuntivitis cream given and sent us on our way after my other dogs had his bottom checked as he has A.F.

tell me about it, all mine have to do is snuffle and their down at the vets with suspected "pneumonia" lol.... such a worry wart when it comes to pets... couldnt give a damn about people tho lol
