puppies now 2days old ,mum was great 1st day ,yesterady she started with the runs :( its like water !! been and got pro kolin for her ,she hate to many afterbirths ....just couldnt get them off her ! she was only eating chicken (cooked) but i think this isnt helping with the runs ,so been and got some more natures banquet nuggets ,shes had some tonight so hoping with will help with runs too...
do any of you feed raw to mums when their feeding pups ? i dont feed raw so i dont know if its ok too!
also shes not being a very good mum ...dont want to clean them ,ive tired it all ...honey on their bits the lot ,but i do think its because she off so hopfuly she will start doing it ...but she will clean their faces lol
her drinking isnt massive shes only having about 2pints aday ,is this enough for a litter of 8? ...stopped giveing her milk incase this is why she has the runs :( ...she WILL NOT eat or drink in her pen AT ALL ,she has to go in the kitchen for it ? ive tried so hard with her to eat and drink their but no!! but shes happy to go in and hace it their ,to be honest i dont think shes that bothard about the pups :(
has any1 eles had this with their bitches before and if so do they get better at being a mum ? ....ive already picked the pup im keeping lol
sorry for long post x

right firdtly someone who knows a lot more than me will be along soon to patch up where ive gone wrong but here goes.
i dont allow my girl to eat ALL the afterbirths...she'll get the first one from first pup born then the rest is binned
because of diarea.
secondly i have fed my girl on raw chicken and extra because she went fussy after the first few days.and like yours she was a first time mum.i think i can remember my girl(first time round)not being interested at all.i more or less had to help her understand it was her job not mine.i would pick up pup and he/she would cry making my girl want to lick the puppy, turn it to bum facing her then whilst shes licking give her the puppy back.ect ect she soon got the hang of things.
she also after 5 days would sneak off and leave them and so i had to have her on a lead and (pups out of pen in warm bed )practically bribe her into the whelping box to feed them.
se would feed and then leave them
i really do think this is because it was first time.
with the mil i feed mine yogurt twice a day goats milk she gets and her puppy food.along with abit of boiled rice and scrambled egg for breaky and boiled chicken in the evening.the moor milk she drinks the more she will produce....so im told??? but i havent argued it!!!
why does she have to eat in the pen?
imo i dont think there is anything wrong with your girl wanting to come out and relax or eat eles where.let her do what shes happy doing id be worried she'll reject them alltogether?
feed her where shes happy, make sure you know that all the pups have been stimulated(toilet)so none get constipated, and hopefully soon she will learn, and her instincs will kick in.
give her time i think you'll be fine.x.x.x
im sure she will :) ,i think shes in shock bless her ,ive tried putting pups to her to lick she just truns away (little sod lol) weve got no probs with her feeding them ,she willing to get back into them and lets them feed (thankgoodness)...i just couldnt get the afterbirths away from her lol she was to quick for me :) but shes paying for it now or should i say i am :( with my girls ive always been able to get to them lol....was alittle worried about raw feeding with not doing it myself ,im tring to give her everything she will eat ,so at the mo i dont know if its the chicken or goats milk giving her the runs ,so im cutting out milk for now cus she is drinking water ,...
as i was writing this i had to stop cus 1 of the pups making alot of noise lol not the miss tiny making it but have notest shes slowing down with her breathing :( :( ive got a feeling will loose her in the night :( i gave her puppy saver when she was born and been giving her nutri drops but when i say tiny i mean tiny ,the pups weigh around 560g this little star only weighs 280g ,and she was born out of her sack (not sure if that makes a difference? ....
Hope your little puppy has made it through the night. Breeding is just worry, worry, worry!!!!
Two of mine were born out the sack and were fine, suppose it depends how quickly they are born etc?
One of my girls gets the runs if I chop and change her food, just wondering if you could make her tummy more upset
by introducing lots of new stuff to her diet?
Sounds like you have took on a massive task with this girl, hope your friend appreciates all your hard work.
I'm sure things will look brighter today, always seems much worse at night.
Afterbirths are very rich but it's natures way of making sure that the bitch has nutrition when she can't get out to find her own food. So if she's eaten all the afterbirths then she needed very little to eat for the first couple of days. If my bitches are happy to eat the afterbirths then I let them but then just give plenty of fluids and maybe a little scrambled egg for the first couple of says. Some just don't want to (and I don't blame them! :( ) and so I give them more to eat, but always what they're used to.
So it's probably just too much food after all the afterbirths that's given her the runs. I'd just feed her scrambled egg and mashed boiled potato (no butter or milk!) today - I don't find that cooked chicken as often recommended by Vets, helps unless it's mixed with loads of boiled rice.
I do feed raw chicken wings for calcium and raw red meat (old breeders used to say that raw meat makes milk ;)) later on but wouldn't suggest that you do if the bitch isn't used to it. This isn't the time to be trying new stuff when she's vulnerable. :)
little 1 as made it another night :) ....but this morning mum is at the vets :( her tummy is so upset and now she not drink water ...im hoping and praying all is ok ! so looks like im going to have to feed them alittle till she gets back :( i hate doing this ,in the past ive had loads of problems getting them to take to the bottle and havnt ever done tube ,fingers crossed she comes back and she can feed them .

they should be fine without food while mum is at vets , surely she wont be gone more than a couple of hours?
shes back now and not well at all ,vet put her on AB's just need to keep an eye on her drinking as she dont want to ,just made her some fish and rice so hopefuly she will eat it ive added lots of water to it , no didnt need to feed them thankgoodness she was 1h ...just need to slowly build her up now ...:) x
Does she have a high temperature?
no hubby didnt say she did when he got back with her , what was you thinking it could be westcoast ?
I don't understand why she'd be given antibiotics if the Vet didn't think she had an infection....... Apart from that, you're just making sure that she's drinking, which is what you would have done anyway?
I would still suspect too much food after eating the placentas.
still carnt get her to eat but she is drinking water ,i will ring vet up monday to see ,thanks :)
Her tummy's sore white lilly - she probably doesn't feel like eating. No food will give it chance to recover. Just make sure she drinks. Pups only need a few drops at the moment so as long as they're feeding..........

How about trying her with a very light chicken broth (just boil up some chicken, bones and all, then stain off, leave to cool and give the liquid). She'll get some nutrition from that and more liquid to keep her hydrated.
I always feed mine on the gruel - its gentle on their tums and they love it!
Gruel recipe - feed up to 4 times daily.
Cup of Porridge
2 cups of Water
2 cups milk (if they can tolerate it)
1 Egg (only 1 per day)
Tablespoon of Honey
Tablespoon of Glucose
Boil up everything together, stirring until porridge is thick, dilute with a cup of milk and cool. Feed lukewarm
yes i think it will be after all shes been through westcoast! x
hi pedlee i do give this mine , but this girl wouldnt drink it :( i think she has problem with chicken and it was that givng her the runs:( x
she also carnt have any milk :( ....i thought my girls where bad after whelping lol ....just hope she starts to eat the fish and rice when shes feeling better ....shes having water every time i take her outside ,its in the kitchen and thats the only place she will drink it lol ....so i try and take her out as much as she will go so she can have a drink ....why did i let myself do this ....hopfuly i get abit more sleep tonight !!! x

Mine have always had had the afterbirths, as that is what is natural, and I would have a job to get there first, LOL, and have never had any problems of diarrhoea, the stool next day is Green and soft, but nothing else.
My girls have most often had 7 pups but up to 9 and are only 20kg adult weight.
How is she this morning white lilly?
