My sister has 2 neutered does that are chewing their way out of their hutch, we have had rabbits all our lives and have never had any that chew as much as these 2. They are dwarf lops and 8 months old, housed in a 4x2x2 two level hutch, have play balls, wooden chew blocks and have free access to pelleted food and hay 24/7. They have this morning chewed completely through the lower door of the hutch and so are now confined to the upper level until we can hopefully make it secure this afternoon. She has tried the bitter sprays to no avail. She will need a new hutch but until the problem is sorted is reluctant to spend any more. I know some peeps have experience of buns on here Any ideas as to a solution ?
Thanks Angela

The two level hutches are great they give a lot more space, however as you don't mention are the rabbits still let out for exercise too? Rabbits may chew the hutch due to boredom/lack of exercise or food deficiencies. With both of them chewing it seems to me they may wish to be let out more, you may have just forgotten to write that down, but are they getting plenty of exercise out of the hutch too?

My bunnies used to chew their hutch until I put a large tree branch in their run (they had free access from their hutch into the run). They loved ripping the bark off and it kept them entertained for hours and was great for their teeth. These wooden chew blocks you can by offer them noting really. They are often smooth and very uninteresting.
Have you tried hiding treats in things ?. Mine loved things like cardboard tubes with treats inside. I learnt early on that buying toys from a petshop was a waste of money.

Bunnies are let out everyday for free running, but the garden is all deck so no chance to dig, perhaps she could get them a sandpit with some soil! thanks Carrington. I sent some apple tree branches over and they were ignored enigmas these too are LOL :0) never known a bunny to refuse that.

Been told today that peat sp and sawdust is a good digging substrate. My bun is a house bound fellow with his 2 story hutch going to ruin in the garden, apart from trying to steal my tea hes a great addition to the house even uses the cat litter to and stretches out in front of the fire with the dogs. I couldnt sleep at night thinking he was chilly outside in these temperatures.
