Hi and thanks to anyone who can help,

My pet had three pipppies on sunday, labour went well and I took them to the vets yesterday (tuesday) and they all got a clear billof health.However I noticed yesterday her bottom to teats (the only ones the pups suck on) have become very large and red, not her belly but the actual teat. She doesn't seem toletit bother her but it looks sore. is this normal?Also is there any way I can get the other pups to suckle on the other teats ?

it is normal for them to be pink but not red or sore looking. it may be mastitis... i would phone your vet. it requires prompt treatment. maybe just a case she is sore.... but if it as me id phone the vet asap and explain the symptoms. dont want to worry you but if it is mastitis it needs treating quickly.

pups know were the most milk is and thats why their using the back 1s :) they will be red if all 3 are only using them and they will go big because of the amount of sucking from them ,i dont think it is anything to worry about from what youve put but if your worried get her checked by your vet ,it will put your mind at rest , but i can only go on what youve said ,good luck :) x

Agree with white lilly that I wouldn't be worrying (unless it was hard, inflamed and swollen.)  I think that you are more likely to panic if you haven't seen it before.

One of my girls last year had a really huge swollen back teat.  Mum had more milk than 3 pups could cope with.  She had got into the habit of lying on the one side, and one teat kept getting missed, because it was harder to access for the pups.  I turned mum, and tried putting pups on the swollen one purposely.  It helped swelling once they had started to 'empty' it.

As they got bigger, and their milk needs were also bigger, teats calmed down soon enough.
