we used a big piece of tarpauline (not a clue on spelling) draped over inside but clipped on top with big camping clips. then put vet bed down on base... when needed cleaning, just lifted the whole thing out. pressure washed the tarpauline which is quick drying and put it back in.

We did homemade whelping boxes quite a few times, bear in mind you need to burn it after use as it is very unlikely you will ever get it germ free again so not safe to use for another litter. Beause of this we never treated ours or lined it, we just covered them good and proper with lots of newspapers and then vetbed on top, always worked fine for the time needed -even with ten large pups last year.

taupaulin / builders polothyne , you could also staple gun it at the top  and can then wipe it down and disinfect it

I have a piece of rubber matting fitted in mine then newpapers and vet bedding on top.  I have also used a splash proof mat I used to put round my sons high chair or when he was painting and stuff and it worked really well.

my whelping box is many years old and I stuck down a piece of lino inside. Also had some floor sealant pain stuff and coated inside with that to make a gel seal liner, which I just rip out after each whelping.

Get some large boxes and use these, that way you can keep changing them when they get grubby

I used lino, used a staple gun to secure it then a sealent to go round the edge inside the box.  It's been a blessing and very easy to clean.
