My girl Ayla was a wee bit off colour and yesterday I would have said looked depressed.  Anyway she was refusing food and today even refused water.  Took her to the vet she has a very high temp and just being through her first season both vet and myself thought it was a pyo.

Wrong, scan showed nothing, but pre op blood tests showed a whole other thing going on.

Ayla has low blood protiens, raised white cell count, the albumin is 6 instead of twenty something and the globulin count is not registering at all.  There are indications from the samples that the pancreas and possibly liver may have something going on as well.  Vet also said that she would have sworn she was a bitch suffering from eclampsia as the calcium levels are low as well.

Ayla is 14 months old and staying with the vet overnight on a drip for fluids and antibiotics, bloods are being sent to Glasgow vet school for 2nd opinion so I will know more tomorrow afternoon on what the prognosis is.  Vet has said what she suspects to be the cause but I don't even want to think of it till we know for certain.  Just want my Ayla home.

ps I will never again say that pre op bloods tests are a waste of time.

Oh Joan I'm sorry to hear this, I hope the vets can find out whats the matter with Ayla, she's in the best possible place, I know its hard, but try to think positive, sending my love and best wishes.

oh how upsetting for you!

Was she given a steroid injection at all?? I know from my experience that that can alter liver readings, just a thought...

could this be PLE? caused by primary lymphangectasia? the low albumin and low protein levels suggest this.... very rare condition that many vets will not think of as it is REALLY rare, but raising its head amongst wheaten and now also in leonbergers (my breed hence me knowing about it) thought my boy had it at one point... his symptoms were very similar to you baby's. turned out to be gastroenteritis. he was in on drip of pain killers and fluids for week, plain diet for further 2 weeks, then completly back to normal..... wish you well. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}

I agree with you on that one! having just found out my dogs liver isnt functioning properly from pre op blood tests!

Ayla came home from the vets last night, for now she is being given hormone injections for a suspected pyo, and antibiotics.  Her temperature in now normal and she has been given something similar to zantax and vitamin b to help her digestion.  She goes today for another hormone and antibiotic injection.   Vet from Glasgow suspects something in her gut absorbing the protiens, she will have her blood tested again to see if there is any change. 

She was quite happy to eat and drink but didn't want to know any of the other dogs, she picked up her toy and lay with it in her paws which is a big improvement from how she was. 

It's great to have her home. :) 

Hi Joan, thanks for the update.  Leaving them at a vet's is awfu - even when we know it's for the best.
Glad she's home and improving slowly.  Everything remains in the pretzel position for you both that the outcome is good and causes treated and cured a.s.a.p

does anyone have any news?

From Ayla and of course the rest of us, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who left comments, emailed and telephoned to see how Ayla was doing. I am absolutely delighted to say that she is almost 100% her old self. Another few visits to the vet in the coming weeks but she now goes in with her tail wagging and takes everything that comes her way with a lick for all.

She has had the last of the hormone injections to treat the suspected pyometra and is now on Royal Canin Intestinal diet which thankfully she seems to really like for the possible malabsorbtion problem.   Until Ayla's bloods come back with higher counts in the protien, albumin and globulin the vet cannot afford to do an exploratory op as she will not heal.  We don't seem to be any closer to finding out what exactly has caused this hicup in Ayla's health for now and maybe we never will.   But most important Ayla is getting her bounce and spark back and quite happy to be with the other dogs again.
