Topic Other Boards / Foo / Swine Flu Vaccine - where's best to have it?
- By Debussy [gb] Date 29.11.09 17:16 UTC
OK.  For those of us who have been offered the vaccine, have you thought of where to have it?  I have heard that it's better to have an injection in your backside, rather than the arm.  Has anyone had the vaccine in the arm, and if so was your arm terribly swollen?

I put that I had had it on the other topic, sore arm, felt a bit off colour for a few days, but better than the alternative!!
I wasn't offered an option of where to have it, infact I wasn't asked anything about health status etc etc.
Maybe she preferred my arm to athe alternative :)

I had mine last Tuesday and my arm is still sore and the glands under the same arm were swollen. Never got ask where I wanted it as the surgery was full of people having it done, felt abit like a conveyor belt.

Had mine in my arm on Friday, aches a bit but not too bad.  I will agree with the conveyor belt!  They also told me I would need a booster in a month, I wasn't expecting that.

hi, i was called in for mine for being a carer,so went along on Wednesday and my arm still hurts more so than the other flu jab but it hasnt stopped me walking the dogs, when i went into the nurses room she wanted to inject my left arm but as i said i was left handed, and even she said my arm would be quite painfull so she done my right arm so all i can say is you choose your arm you want it in not the nurse.I ve yet to have any other side effects, all the best to you Debby

I wasn't going to have mine, but working in Asda Walmart on Checkouts decided it was probably a good idea after being coughed and sneezed all over the past couple of weeks.  So I had mine yesterday at our local health centre, don't have to go back for a booster though? Was done in my left arm they said my arm would be sore for a couple of days and at worst I could have headaches etc. all which I should take paracetamol for.

My arm was little uncomfortable last night, but today it's not too bad at all and I feel fine...........she says with her fingers crossed!  Can't even see where the needle went in.

Had mine last wednesday in left arm, it swelled a treat and itched up a storm but no where near as bad as this years normal flu jab so for me it wasn't much of a problem.

Thanks for replies.  I guess arm is the favourite then.  I'm still a little nervous but will definitely have it because I don't want to catch it at school and pass it on to the family.

I've been offered the vaccine and was most annoyed.
I had a letter through the post a week ago telling me that I had been identified as one of the governments 'at risk' groups and that vaccine was available to me, and that I should ring my surgery to make an appontment.
I phoned my surgery and asked them what conditions I had to meet to be deemed at risk other than being 50yrs and fed up with work :(
I have no health issues what so ever, I can't even remember when I last went to my GP or who he even is.
Apparently my surgery used outside contractors to handle this situation and they made a total hash of it, the lady on the phone told me 'sorry but we've been having loads of problems, the contractors we've used have made a total mess of things.
What I find annoying is that some 'outside body' has had my phone number, address and NHS number.
The fact that they cocked things up and offered me the vaccine makes me wonder who hasn't been offered it that should have.

i suppose its better to have it offered than be forgotten. sainsburys say you can have it there and pay for it! what a cheek!

Asda were offering the normal Flu jab for £8, which isn't too bad if not entitled to it on the NHS, I know my mum used to pay for it before she reached 65?? I think it was.

Two very valid points!   I would suggest a letter to your surgery's Patient Group (if they have one) or the Practice Manager, would be appropriate.

Best wishes.

I agree . I wouldn't want my GP giving my details out !!

However , you hopefully wouldn't have recieved the jab as the nurse who gives it has to read and sign a Patient Group Directive (PGD ) and this states who gets the jab and where on the body it can be given. The PGD is basically a prescription for all the groups who can have it such as pregnant women and those with asthma  . Therefore if you aren't one of the groups on the PGD , you shouldn't get it .
