A friend is a teacher; she had a boy in one of her classes called Padraig (pronounced Porrig).  His best friend could never quite get the hang of this and called him porridge...

- By kenya [gb] Date 26.11.09 15:15 UTC Edited 26.11.09 15:18 UTC

I like the quite unusual names, the only thing people cant pronounce them!!

Connor is the anglicised version of Conor or Conchobar, which is the Irish form.  It means "lover of hounds".  My second son is called Conor -the first is Patrick.

I also like the names Niall, Conal, Brocc and Brogan.
- By dogs a babe Date 26.11.09 18:31 UTC
I noticed Cormac was missing so I googled to check it was Irish.  That opened a whole new experience.  I honestly thought I'd have known most names.  However, there are some very unusual ones here that I don't think I've ever heard!

Pronounciation always going to be a problem unless you go for altered or phonetic spelling - no reason not to though if it helps in the ring...

Good luck choosing

I know what you mean! My bitch is Aoife and if folk see it written they can't pronounce it, if they try to write it they can't spell it! My dog is Riley which is also Irish and much easier although we did think about spelling it Reilly when he was little. I love Irish names and have a book of Celtic names somewhere and it has some really old fashioned ones.

Here you go - I've written you one...

I once knew a collie called Kelly
Who used to be on the telly
One day with a cough
He slipped and fell off
And now he just lies on his belly

Perhaps every dog should have one :)

We have a Seamus at the yard. Hes a huge 12 year old Hanovarian, with the mental age of a four month old foal *rolls eyes*. It is a fairly unusual name for a horse though :-)

My daughter was to be called Niamh, but my dopey ex couldnt get his head around the spelling/pronounciation. So I had to compromise with Caitlin. However people still spell it with K's, added Y's and all sorts. Quite infuriating!! lol

My son is called Flynn - scottish gaelic but sounds like it should be Irish.

Blimey - like trying to rhyming with orange!!

There once was a dog called Oberon
Who thought he came from Krypton
But when he looked at the sky
And attempted to fly
Titania called him a "Moron"!
- By ali-t [gb] Date 30.11.09 19:21 UTC
