Hi, I've had my letter calling me for swineflu jab, has anyone had it? Did it make you unwell? Really don't know whether to have it or not. Any advice gratefully recieved.

I had mine 10 days ago.  I had a sore arm for a few days, it was more painful than the normal seasonal flu jabs, I felt a bit tired but not other ill effects.  I had the Pandemrix one, you only need one dose of this one, there are two different brands.  If you get the Celvapan vaccine you will need 2 doses 3 weeks apart.  I think if you are taking immunosuppressants then it might be different.

I have opted not to have it.
The virus is rife here, yet it takes three weeks to be effective, also I believe it has already started to mutate, and that is going to mean another jab.....so that is why I have said no thanks.

Karen :)
et;  those who had it have suffered sore arms and general malaise of a minor kind.
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 23.11.09 18:36 UTC
Its 1 dose only - Im in an 'at risk' group so have been advised to have it and have only 1 opportunity to be guaranteed its availability.

Hi,

I had mine on Saturday, apart from a sore arm, quite swollen and red at the injection site, I have been fine. No different in reaction to the normal 'flu vac for me. I decided to take up the offer just to be on the safe side- eligible owing to asthma.

HTH

Best wishes.

I am also 'at risk' - it never crossed my mind not to have it.  I know that swineflu could kill me or at best lower my already low lung function.
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 23.11.09 19:10 UTC
I think part of my problem is that I don't know anyone has had H1N1 and I had the seasonal one last year and felt pretty rough afterwards, but I thinking about it I'd prob feel a lot worse if I got swineflu. So wont be at BUBA then :-( as my 1 opportunity is on the sameday.

I am due mine on Wednesday, been told a localised reaction is a good thing as it shows the body is taking the vacine up.

I had mine last week and same as everyone else just had a sore arm for a few days. I was a bit worried at first but more worried about getting swine flu and being really sick
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 23.11.09 20:58 UTC
I had mine last Thursday as I am "high risk", I wasn't keen but hubby persuaded me. I had the one off dose, the nurse said they didn't know what side effects to expect. I had a hot, heavy arm and have developed a bit of a cough and slight cold. The next morning I woke up achey. Probably better than the real thing!!
Hope it doesn't affect you badly.

Still waiting for our health centre/doctors to get it in!

I've had a letter and also keep on getting e-mails from work as I work for the NHS.  I haven't done anything so far and don't know whether I should.  Last Christmas I was really ill with ? some kind of flu and didn't see anyone from the 23rd Dec. to the 1st Jan (including my parents).  I'm ill again at the moment, hoping that it is just a bad cold, which I'm sure it is.
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 23.11.09 22:12 UTC
Going to have it and be grateful I have opportunity to have then, the letter states that there were 500 doses issued to the surgery, hope your docs get them in soon Sullysmum. Thanks Angela

I had both flu and swine flu last week both arms were sore n swollen. I was tired for about 5 days and had headache sickness and took the cold. In fairness thought dont know what jag caused it because this is the first time ive had the normal flu jag.

I'm having both on the same day different arms (5 Dec)
Have had to wait a couple of weeks (dr's advice) as I had an asthma flare up a month ago.
This was caused by building being painted outside at work and catching
a nasty cold from one of my work colleagues.
Now got stronger inhaler to try and correct it too :(

I was too ill last year to get my flu jab by catching a cold from a work colleague..
which ended up in me coughing for months on end, chest x-rays and speech therapy.
Because I'd coughed so much I put strain on my vocal chords and changed them so had to
work at getting them exercised in the right way again.

As each cold I catch now aggreivates my asthma so badly I've decided it's worth getting both jabs to
stop me having the same or worse problems as above.

I had it last Tuesday the one dose type and apart from my arm being sore and a flare up of my sinus I've been ok. I get it because I have sarcoidosis which effects my lungs and eyes and I am on anti rejection drugs for my eyes also steroids for my last chest infection.

My friend's teenage son had it, as he gets asthma, and his whole arm was completely numb for two days, he couldn't move it...my daughter is due to have it on Thursday, so am a bit dubious about it, but then again, I wouldn't like to think she could be really ill if she should get swine flu, so as it is at the moment, we are going ahead with it.
- By SharonM Date 24.11.09 10:36 UTC
I've had my letter too, but not having it either.  I used to have the normal flu jab but it made me so ill I gave up on having it.  So I've opted out of having the Swineflu jab as well.
- By Sullysmum Date 24.11.09 19:33 UTC
Hubby and got the swine flu jabs done today, the ordinary flu jabs we had done middle Oct.
- By St.Domingo Date 24.11.09 20:42 UTC
If you have been called you must be in a high risk group ?
If you normally have a yearly flu jab i would have it . This is just a flu jab - it just happens to have been given a name !
- By Kasshyk [gb] Date 24.11.09 20:47 UTC
I am 'at risk' should be grateful I have a choice. Have decided to go ahead and will let you know how I get on.

Just adding to the end :-)

I had both last week and no problems apart from slight fever and some tenderness. The day after my arms felt like lead weights but it wasn't sore.

it really depends on the person.
I haven't had the flu jab for 15 years  because last time I got it I was badly sick for 3 weeks....(turned out it was glandular fever not flu but the connection was already in my mind) :-).......Got both this year cuz I'm getting older and my asthma is quite bad at the moment.

Cheers

Snap!  I'm having both on 5th Dec.  I have very mild asthma but making sure i take inhalers reguarly now.  Also having is as granddaughter is very much at risk - although her surgery haven't made contact with my daughter yet!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 25.11.09 12:32 UTC
My son had it he's asthmatic (age 22) no problems.
- By Schip Date 25.11.09 13:40 UTC
Had mine this morning didn't hurt only thing I can say is my arm is itching up a storm so body is doing its job.
- By dollface Date 25.11.09 15:34 UTC
We have that jab here finally open to everyone- We decided not to have it yet- its really just another flue and we feel if our imune system is strong we should be fine- plus I think it has kinda went through our house already- my children both had a fever for a bit, cold, runs- us sick to and just starting to feel a lil better now which is good. Had my kids pulled out of school for the week.
- By Crespin Date 25.11.09 18:05 UTC
had it, my arm was sore, and I was a bit tired, but nothing I couldnt deal with
- By denese [gb] Date 25.11.09 18:50 UTC
Boxacrazy,
You havn't got a chose but to have it, asthma is being triggered by a lot of viruses, at the moment, one of my grandaughter's was at a carvery having a meal with my daughter her mom, 3 weeks ago, she is 12 and just went into an asthma attack and had to call 999. she goes blue and is very ill, it takes weeks then, to get well again. Always on steriods. As a family we are still not sure about the swineflu jab.
A lot of Doctors and health care workers are not having it. But! with asthma there isn't a chose. The gamble is to high!!

> A lot of Doctors and health care workers are not having it.

But how many of them are not having the yearly flu jab either ?  I could have one through work but i never have . If it really becomes as bad as it could be , i'll be there like a shot !!!!
- By Tessies Tracey Date 26.11.09 04:25 UTC

> also I believe it has already started to mutate, and that is going to mean another jab

It certainly has mutated, and was always going to and probably WILL keep mutating too.  Could mean another jab, but it could take more time for yet another vaccine to be developed.  How many jabs will that mean in the end?! lol  It could go on and on.

Not keen on that idea myself, so shan't be having any vaccine.

Glad I'm not alone!
