Hi - I am new on this site. I am planning to get my first toy poodle light brown in colour. I have found the puppy which is home reared and I have seen the mother. However I am due to pick him up when the breeder has suddenly said that she does not have the papers for the father and that the KC papers were in her boyfriend's name and as they parted on bad terms she cannot get the KC registration. I am not sure what to make of this as I said that I am willing to purchase the puppy at a lower price given that she can no longer prove the pedigree and health of the father but she has said that she will just give me back my deposit as there are plenty of people around willing to get the puppy for the full price without the registration.
I guess what has annoyed me most is that she advertised and confirmed with me when I first went there that the registration will be fine and she just needs to find the father's papers as she has just moved house. Please advice me what I should do as I have met the puppy and am finding it difficult to be objective. Particularly the mum is really calm and so were the puppy. Thanks!

Please don't buy the puppy, it all sounds very dodgy, and if she lied about the paperwork you can bet she lied about any health tests! I know you have seen the puppy but harden your heart and go else where. People like her rely on soft hearted people like you and unfortunately when you buy a puppy from these kind of people it only encourages them to breed even more knowing that they can still get the money because once you have seen the pups its very hard to say no.
Take back your deposit and find a health tested well bred puppy, you wont regret it in the long run. If you want any reputable poodle breeders telephone numbers send me a private message I am more than willing to try and help you as I just want folk to get a healthy puppy and not be ripped off. :)

If I were you, I'd take my deposit back, thank the backyard breeder nicely, walk away - and breathe a sigh of relief!
Has this breeder tested for progressive retinal atrophy? Would she even know what it is?
Take your deposit back - and look for a good, well-respected breeder of poodles - please don't be taken in by all the PDE-hype - there ARE good show breeders out there, who will have litters of puppies who will be registered, from health-tested parents - and who will come with KC registration and no cock & bull story about someone's boyfriend taking the dog off in a huff!
Hi Both.
Thanks for the advise I have emailed her to send back the deposit. You are both right I can't be soft hearted as that is exactly what she is doing. ... Thanks - I will keep looking.
Hi I have just read your message about the puppy you were hoping to get, I expect you are very disappointed. I have 2 dark apricot toy poodles both dogs which I bought as a result of going through the Kennel club on my vets suggestion. My 2 are now 3 and 5 years old and seem to be very healthy. The breeder I bought them from has bred toy poodles for a long time and shows at Crufts so they weren't cheap and I saw the parents of both dogs as well as getting the pedigrees and confirmation of eye tests done on both mums and dads. The last poodle I had whom I took on after I lost my Dad was always rather sickly suffering from Collitis all his life which made me very wary when I got my current 2 as puppies, so I can well understand your worries. I hope you find your new pup soon. Good luck.

Even better try to find a breeder through the breed clubs as they will know of reputable breeders that are club members (that mean more than casually interested in their breed).

very sensible.
if shes been less then honest with you about the paperwork then one has to question what else has been neglected.
another reason some folk do unregistered litters is so as they can breed their bitch every season which is also a possible :( buying unregistered pups can encourage puppy farming. :(
Just wanted to say i feel so sorry for you. Nothing more upsetting than not getting what you've set your heart on but believe me you have done the right thing.
I have a poodle who in hindsight was not from the most reputable breeder. When i get my next one (ssshh, i'm planning a few more but dont let the family know!) i will be doing more research and not letting my heart rule my head.
The right pup will come along and you'll be so glad you waited for him/her :-)
Get back your deposit asap!
It sounds like she never had the papers but hoped that once people had seen the said puppies, fallen in love with them and paid the deposit they would not care whether they were registered or not.

Hi Winnie!
Welcome to the forum!! If you click on the blue writing
It will take you to the Poodle breed clubs of the UK I would say your best bet is to view their puppy lists for their known and accredited breeders who follow a breed club code of ethics (health testing etc..) and maybe get in touch with some folk there to discuss what you're looking for and whose lines would be best for you.
We have a few Poodle girls on the forum (off the top of my head Fifi and Fee fabrooks) If you put 'poodle' into the search box (bottom of this page) it will show you posts where poodles have been discussed on this forum, so maybe you can find some like minded folk and private message them for pointers, they may well be able to suggest shows/ events you could go to to see different breeders/dogs/lines and get an idea of whose dogs you like.
Hope this helps!
Very best of luck in your search. You have absolutely done the right thing in walking away from this flim-flam breeder :-)
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for all your advise and encouragement. We have phoned quite a few breeders today from the accredited contacts on the Kennel Club an d through the listings on here following all your advise. We are going to Dorset tomorrow to have a look at some puppies - Apricot. The breeder seems much more forth coming and explained that she has all the papers and the health tests that have been performed along with the DNA that I can see. I could also see it on the KC website. So I am hoping this will be much better experience and even though a bit more expensive it will be worth it in the end. So as long as one of the puppies like us then maybe I have found the puppy I am looking for....
Thanks Winnie xxx

well an Apricot puppy will go with your screen name so must be fate, good luck.
Hi again
Does the breeder who you are going to see in Dorset live in Shaftesbury by any chance if so it is the same lady that I bought my two toy dark apricot poodles from and I have to say I have no regrets at all getting them from this breeder as they are both very well bred and healthy. The Kennel club name is Wightwonder and I would certainly go back to this breeder if I ever wanted another toy poodle. I hope you find the pup ypu are lookinf for.

Hi Taylor,
Thats the breeder and the mum as well. Thats really good to hear that you have had no regrets and that the poodles you have are healthy! I am quite hopeful now :)

I have known Sylvia ( Wightwonder toy poodles) and her husband Tony for many many years and can assure you that things will be done correctly and to the best of her ability.

All sounds good.
I do think Googling the parents of a litter can tell you at least that they are shown or worked and not just being used for breeding.
Hi All,
I went there today and the lady spend a good deal of time explaining everything and how she had reared her dogs and what she feeds them etc. She had all the papers there and on hand showing that all the health checks were carried out along with a chart showing the past 5 generations! There were also 3 puppies to choose from, and I totally fell in love with one of them a light Apricot girl and called her Brownie. So we took her home ! I am really excited at the moment!! Thanks to you all for your helpful advice other wise I could have made a really bad mistake....
Congratulations on your new puppy I am sure you will be delighted with her. I have to say you were lucky to get a choice of puppy from the breeder only when I bought Pepe 3 years ago although I was the first to enquire about the puppies before they were even born I wasn't able to choose although there were 2 dogs in the litter, Mrs Riddett chose for me and said that the other dog in the litter had gone to another show home to be a stud dog. Having said that Pepe is the sweetest natured dog there is so no regrets. Maybe she varies depending on how many pups are available at the time. If you look at your puppies pedigree you should see a dam called wightwonder quite a star this dog is my older poodle Rusty's mum so your pup's mum Rosie is my dogs half sister.
I'm delighted to hear that you now have a new puppy and that everything has worked out so well for you. It's amazing to think that in only a couple of days this forum has not only helped stop you from making a major mistake in buying the original puppy, but actually helped to find you one from someone who, I gather, is a reputable and well-respected breeder. (Sorry, poodles are not my breed).

Great result- Wishing you years of happiness together x

If only this were the result for every person locking for a puppy, then the breeders (i don't like dignifying them with the title) with poor standards would soon stop breeding as they would not be able to sell their badly bred/reared/cared for stock.
I do hope the person buying a Pug puppy does not end up going with the BYB bred litter.
What a great happy ending, would love this to be a sticky so its seen by many.

What a GREAT outcome to this thread, a real joy to read! :)

So very, very pleased for you. And well done for not getting sucked in and letting your heart rule your head. :-)
Hi Everyone,
The puppy is wonderful and doing great, she is really bouncy and loves chasing us round the garden!
I guess unsupprisingly the 'backyard breeder' is now refusing to send through the deposit saying that I messed her around as I decided not to go ahead even though it was her that offered the refund, so I am even more glad that I did not purchase that puppy as there is clearly something strange going on as she was banking on me getting the puppy. So I am really happy that I got this really wonderful little friend instead!
Thanks once again!
