Hi guys, have been searching for a previous post on this subject but none answered the question I had - so apols in advance!

am in contact with a breeder in Germany who has a litter I am interested in, I can have a bitch (woo hoo) but now comes the issue of importation.

He states that he has certification from his local authority that he is in a rabies-free area, and he would prefer if I could go and collect pup before 12 weeks of age. He has asked me to find out the rules and regs from this end, so we can get things organised and I can book my passage in advance.

Now I'm not sure if I recall a post about pups that leave early straight from Mum without needing a rabies vacc, as that is what slows the process down.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with who to contact to get chapter and verse so I can pass info on and get the ball rolling??

At 12 weeks the puppy could be microchipped and have a rabies vaccination, and about 3 weeks later have a blood test to make sure that the vax has taken. However the puppy wouldn't be allowed into Britain until 6 months after the date of the blood test - so you'd have to make arrangements for the puppy to be boarded on the continent until that time; she could enter the country at about 10 months of age.

The other option is to put her into quarantine in this country for 6 months.

JG is right. A rabies free area makes no difference at all, not even a certified rabies free COUNTRY does. You still have to go through the entire process I'm afraid. I'm currently doing it myself, my puppy was born 31st of January this year and will enter England on the 13th of December. Luckily the breeder was able to keep him all this time and most importantly get him out and about and socialise him. I'm paying 5 euros a day for his keep.

If he will then I will probably arrange to visit a few times to get to know the bitch etc

If he is not able to board the bitch for you (you will obviously have to pay him for her keep and socialisation), then there are people on the continent offering a Pets Passport waiting period boarding service, or there is quarantine, the costs are likely to be pretty similar.

It's Pet Passport or quarantine sadly.  Which has put me off importing and also people abroad from keeping their dogs for that length of time!

The alternative is to take a bitch abroad for mating, that way she comes back with you and hopefully you get a whole litter to choose a pup from, the downside is you only get half new blood.

thanks for advice guys - have e-mailed the breeder and offered to pay for upkeep etc, am even considering travelling over there to any shows once she gets to 6 months so I can get to handle her (hopefully)

I understand if he doesn't want to go ahead, but am keeping all my fingers and toes crosssed!!!

I know there are litters over here, and it's a bit of a punt bringing something in, but I really liked the lines and sometimes you have to go above and beyond

It's the worst kept secret in the world Yvonne, we thought we'd kept it quiet but everyone seemed to know LOL so we gave up trying. It's a male Mali -to be co-owned with Thea J. He's lovely!

well it's all systems go!! :) so next July I shall be collecting our new addition, all being well :)

The breeder is going to let me know about any eligible local shows as I would like to go over and experience it over there as well, they have their speciality in May so that should be very informative!!

and upkeep is being charged at 1 euro per day from age of 12 weeks which I think is fantastic!

I'm sure I will let you know once we get our girl - thanks everyone for your advice :)

Brilliant news! And that is a VERY good price indeed! Great news about the shows as well -same with my dog, he's been shown, it's great to know training has started if nothing else. :)

I know, I'm still trying not to get TOO excited, after all it's still a time away yet ;)

he'll be running whichever bitch I choose alongside the one he's keeing, so they will be trained together for showing - plus he is very knowledgable re the breed so I am looking forward to visiting a few times and picking his brains :)

That just about covers the pups food I would think so very kind of the breeder to be so accommodating.

Glad it is going ahead, exciting times. Just a quick note though, in most of Europe you can enter pups in shows from 3 months so, if you wanted you could get to handle her earlier than 6 months. I don't know if that is the "done thing" in your breed but just thought you might like to know.

Trust me, the wait will go really quickly :).
I have just been over to see my new girl(8 weeks old) and started the ball rolling, so that we get her home in the end of June!
Our girl will be growing up with her sibling too and be shown by the lady who looks after her for us.
The price you have been given by the breeder is very good indeed!

I wasn't aware of that, will ask breeder as that would mean I could go over to more shows, if applicable in breed :)

am really pleased with keeping-fees too, I am paying more for the pup (standard German price is significantly higher than in UK) but that includes all innoculations and other treatments (tick etc) plus it includes the importation costs, I just have to pay for a British health test which they don't do, and my travelling etc

it all works out pretty good though, I was anticipating paying more anyway, so I'm happy, the cost was never an issue if you know what I mean ;)

he sent me a list of names last night too so I can have a degree of choice (now really trying not to get excited!! :))

Not in Germany at the big shows, that would be the equavalent of Champ shows in the UK you can't. It is the same as UK Minor puppy begins 6-9mo.

And I believe 4mo (although not attended one as they have only just set up a club in Germany for my breed, so am happy to be corrected on that one if I am wrong) for Club/ Open shows. I believe it to be the same in Holland, where I occasionally show.
