Hi all
This week this documentary strand is following a litter of Staffies to their new homes if anyone is interested.  Looks like it might be worth a watch - sorry if this has already been mentioned.
All the best.

Backyard breeders exposed should be the title of this show! Minature dobermans, Christmas puppys, puppys being walked without injections, no health tests, rehoming 4 month old pups, these people haven't got a bloody clue. Arghhhhhhhh! Disgusting, this makes me sick to the very core, at least is shows that dog breeding doesn't pay and is a lot harder than first thought. Still horrible.
- By CVL Date 12.11.09 22:26 UTC
I hoped it was going to be making a point about GOOD Staffie breeders, and showing them as wonderful pets, not status symbols.  Very disappointed, and very disturbed :-(
- By lel [gb] Date 12.11.09 22:29 UTC
complete waste of licence fee payers money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By ceejay Date 12.11.09 22:34 UTC
Just caught the end of this.  The only good thing that I can say is that the puppy breeder ends up saying that it didn't make any money and gave her a lot of work - and she did take responsiblity for the pup that had to be rehomed.  I was horrified at Italian guard dog that was said to be dangerous - it made the woman feel safe to walk the streets because no-one would touch her with a dog like that.  What would the world be if we all walked around with agressive dogs at our side to protect us!
- By Goldmali Date 12.11.09 22:35 UTC
I thought it was good. It showed the people that think they can make money from breeding a litter that you do not, it showed if you don't pick your buyers carefully puppies come back, and it was priceless when the breeder got an e-mail from a potential buyer that DID know what they were on about and she admitted she knew nothing about health testing.  For once the BYBs were shown to look bad, not the show breeders!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.11.09 22:41 UTC
I only saw the last few minutes and agree with Marianne that it showed the BYB regretted it as it cost her effort etc and made no money.
- By lel [gb] Date 12.11.09 22:41 UTC
I dont think joepublic will see that though- all they will see id the baaaaaad sbt which wasnt even a full sbt in the programme
- By CVL Date 12.11.09 22:43 UTC

> it was priceless when the breeder got an e-mail from a potential buyer that DID know what they were on about and she admitted she knew nothing about health testing.  For once the BYBs were shown to look bad, not the show breeders!

I wish that there had been some info on what should be done though, it didn't really make it obvious that's what you should be looking for, I thought she made out the emailer was silly...
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.11.09 22:45 UTC
I missed it, but if it pointed out that there's a downside to breeding puppies then it will have done a better job than PDE.
- By Goldmali Date 12.11.09 22:49 UTC
all they will see id the baaaaaad sbt

I didn't see any of the dogs portrayed as bad at all, just the owners.
- By DiscipleOFdogs [gb] Date 12.11.09 23:00 UTC
I agree, but I don't think it made the emailer look silly but the breeder for being 100% clueless, I'm sure all the true SBT breeders were belly laughing at her at that momment, what a stupid woman!
- By CVL Date 12.11.09 23:05 UTC
Agree about true breeders, but I mean the general public.... who may want a Staffie, not sure it really made it clear to avoid people like that, and to ask questions like the person who emailed.  We all (on this forum) know that various health tests must be done before breeding your dog, but there are more people who don't.  Maybe I expect too much from the BBC :-)
- By lel [gb] Date 12.11.09 23:08 UTC

>>>>all they will see id the baaaaaad sbt

I didn't see any of the dogs portrayed as bad at all, just the owners. <<<

I disagree as they tried to portray the sbt as wanted by some purely for protection purposes and so we go round in circles again
- By DiscipleOFdogs [gb] Date 12.11.09 23:16 UTC

If you expect the BBC to produce an informative educational programme on dog breeding and culture then I'm afraid your Staffie is jumping up the wrong Chav :D :D :D :D
No but seriously, we do need a Backyard Breeders Exposed! please JH why don't you do this? I think you will help more dogs this way than targetting show breeders, afterall this program really showed where the cancer of dog breeding is,in the backyard. The BBC cannot be ignorant anymore. I'm sure we'll get there one day when all other avenue's of dog and breeder bashing have been explored, I hope its sooner than later.
- By rjs [gb] Date 13.11.09 10:21 UTC
I caught something on Channel 5 news the other day slating BYB when I was flicking channels.
- By Goldmali Date 13.11.09 11:06 UTC
I disagree as they tried to portray the sbt as wanted by some purely for protection purposes

Yet they didn't show a single dog as being aggressive!

Good!  Then perhaps it might put off the idiots who think they are! :)

(Haven't seen programme I hasten to add!)
- By Goldmali Date 13.11.09 11:08 UTC
We all (on this forum) know that various health tests must be done before breeding your dog, but there are more people who don't.

True, and the average person won't know a thing about MOST of what was mentioned -but surely anyone can understand what an eye test is? The woman actually said "Eye testing, what is that, I've never heard of it".
- By joyce [lv] Date 13.11.09 11:14 UTC
I felt totally sorry for the puppies, none of them went to homes for the right reasons. She blamed xmas puppies for the lack of sales, so no doubt she will be mating the female again at the right time of year!!!  Very, very, sad.
- By CVL Date 13.11.09 11:17 UTC
I don't doubt people will understand the term 'eye testing', but they wouldn't necessarily know that is what should be done, that point wasn't made.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.11.09 11:17 UTC
I was very disappointed and thought how two faced the BBC were.  It all seemed fairly relaxed, as though this was the norm. and nothing truly said about this being the wrong way of doing things.  Totally different to the demonic way that they treated those of us who show and usually do things in the correct way!
- By fosters [gb] Date 13.11.09 11:27 UTC
they should rename the programe seven pups for seven totally unsuitable owners!!!

that man who kept his puppy locked up all day and couldnt afford the installments disgusted me all he was worried about was getting his £25 back

but then none of them went to suitable homes and all because she wanted new flooring
- By lel [gb] Date 13.11.09 11:29 UTC
I wonder where they all are now?
- By joyce [lv] Date 13.11.09 11:48 UTC
perrodeagua  so true x

Am I the only one who viewed this program from a completely different angle? To me this program went far deeper than 'bashing staffies'. I felt in many ways that the dogs were incidental to the real story being told. They had used the staff as a means to tie the stories together but I thought the program was more about the lives of those breeding and buying a pup and why, than the actual dogs themselves. Infact, the breed of dog could have been anything at all, as long as it was perceived as a 'hard' dog. I found the program a very sad one and showed what a troubled world we live in.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.11.09 12:23 UTC
No Admin, I saw that side also.
- By rjs [gb] Date 13.11.09 12:25 UTC
I've just sat and watched the programme on iplayer and found it really sad! Agree totally with admin.
- By triona [gb] Date 13.11.09 12:58 UTC
waaaa I missed it, is there a repeat this weekend?
- By Goldmali Date 13.11.09 13:13 UTC
You can no doubt catch it on iPlayer.

Yes I agree Admin -the breed was incidental.
- By Andi2020 [gb] Date 13.11.09 13:18 UTC
I just watched it on I Player too and found it very, very sad.  The world we live in leaves so much to be deisred in a number of ways.
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 13.11.09 14:28 UTC
The one guy, unemployed-2 kids-can't afford vaccinations, what did he propose if he had a vet estimate for £300/400 for something............Oh yes, those nice people at the R***A hospital :-(
As someone posted, the breed was not the point, but just how NOT to breed a litter or buy a pup.

On ITV1, teletext page 136, there is a review of the programme and an email address at the end for any viewers' comments.  Only there today though.
- By helenmd [gb] Date 13.11.09 18:09 UTC
I think they should do a follow up programme in a few months time showing the puppies going into rescue .A very depressing documentary.
- By DerbyMerc [gb] Date 13.11.09 20:41 UTC
It just shows how the Staffs suffer from such a large minority of poor owners - and I wonder what would happen if Staffs were banned and these people turned en masse to some other muscular breeds with a more naturally guardy temperament.
- By ceejay Date 13.11.09 20:44 UTC
I agree with you Admin - from what I saw.  The dogs were all lovely and I wanted to rescue the lot!  I even wondered if that big black guard dog was as nasty as she claimed - was it just for image that she told the world what an agressive dog it was.  It was particularly sad at the end that the breeder found a home for the puppy and rehomed her son.  Good for her mother for taking them both on.
- By peppe [gb] Date 13.11.09 21:04 UTC
Went to watch it tonight and sky plusbox didn't record it very disappointed do you know if it is being reshown on any other channel.
- By ClaireyS Date 13.11.09 21:38 UTC
I might go to bed and watch it on i-player, I missed the beginning yesterday so couldnt really "get" what was going on !
- By Tessies Tracey Date 13.11.09 22:55 UTC

> and I wonder what would happen if Staffs were banned and these people turned en masse to some other muscular breeds with a more naturally guardy temperament.

Sadly, it would screw it all up for those of us who do have respect and knowledge of our breed.
'These people' would indeed just simply turn to another breed unfortunately.

I haven't seen the programme, but agree with Admin that the abuse of certain breeds is a societal problem.

I thought it was hilarious when the woman was talking about mini dobes, and she couldn't walk that far because she had been spayed! Highlights the *****s their way of living and how that one ****** now has something to look forward to when he comes home. From causing someone serious harm, his dog not his two young children or his girlfriend.
- By peppe [gb] Date 14.11.09 10:04 UTC
I would love to watch it on the iplayer but having real problems with tiscali for 2 months one minutes got connection then not and then cuts out halfway though using it an absolute nightmare.
- By kazz Date 15.11.09 16:57 UTC
Okay if you can't get I player....is there a rerun of this.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 16.11.09 22:45 UTC
ive just watched it on iplayer and im just lost for words .......very sad and out of her wanting money shes made herself alot of hard work for nothing ......hope alot of ppl watching that now know theres no money to be made breeding !!!
