Two questions for the raw feeders will I increase the chance of picking up heartworm if I feed heart regulary. I always make sure it has been frozen for 3 weeks will this kill the worms if they are there. Also read that the freezer has to reach a certain temperature to do this.  Also I have a chance of fish heads cod, would these be worth introducing say twice weekly. Your thoughts please.

Never tried fish heads
Heart and offal isnt recommended to be fed too often (once a week or so should be fine) but mine have done fine on it so far

No problem here either feeding heart and liver twice a week. Only buy stuff fit for human consumption.

Heart is usually considered muscle meat. I'm not sure about the heartworm issue so have asked on another list

As I understood it we don't have  heartworm in the UK (other than the French heartworm that has appeared over the last few years), and if there was an issue it woudl be obvious when it was inspected.

My dogs love lambs heart but won't eat it if I give them a whole one, I have to cut it into large chunks and have never seen any signs of worms in it. I've never tried fish heads as they won't eat raw fish, I have to cook it slightly and the idea of cooking fish heads doesn't do anything for me I'm afraid.

I get ox hearts and cut them into chunks but the girlies will only eat them if I fry them lightly in olive oil first (rolleyes) so I just quickly sear them with some oil and a couple of cloves of garlic and they love it. (I get a couple and do the lot in one go then freeze in small bags)  Never seen any heartworm signs I think as it is sold as fit for humans it's ok. But I do freeze all my beef products well before feeding. I have had a large quantity of beef brisket and they just adore it and the bone in it is soft and honeycombed so they scrunch up every bit with relish. Heart is a muscle meat though and cannot replace liver/kidneys etc so make sure they are getting some. I have found the bags of natures best nuggets from PAH make feeding a good quantity of offle/veg so easy I just slip a couple of nuggets into each meal and down it goes.

PS Mine will eat raw fish but they often leave the heads I don't think they like the bigger jaw bones !

I get ox hearts too, they love 'em and especially like a good chew on the tubes.  They occasionally get lambs hearts but Foxy has a bit of bad bottie when she eats lamb.

I get the odd salmon head from the fishmonger and lightly steam and the dogs wolf it down.  I also give them cod's heads, again lightly steamed - they love 'em!

Great responce, Will try steaming a couple of heads thought this might kill any worms etc.
