hi all, i have a pup hes 7mths and ive suspected he may be to big, but hes a different type to my others so i could be wrong. hes actually an inch over,but looks even more! i have asked my breeder, but they will not have it and i actually think they were offended!
anyway i have been reading critiques and they sometimes mention 'up to size' what does it mean please? lol
also at a show, someone made very nice comments on my dog but said he was 'up to size'

Can you tell us the breed and the size she is, that will help.

Up to size means that judge considers your dog to be at the top end of the size scale. In some breeds size is an important factor due to original breed function but is a fault like any other, the perfect dog has yet to be bred in any breed. My breed is measured and its a term frequently used in critiques.

What breed of terrier? They range in size from the little Australian terrier at 110" to the Airedale at about 24"!

Okay, so most of the ones you see are midgets ....

At 7 months I would not worry to much, Terriers mature early,
a breed judge will forgive size, if the exhibit has overall
balance and type...

alot depend on the breed itself. Also is it just length of leg or is it big in every way....eg if itst a spannable and its too big to be spanned....then yes it will be a problem.

My breed's not a terrier but my bitch reached pretty much her full growth by 7 months - now at 5 years old she is on the top end of the size scale but not too huge, but she looked ridiculous in minor puppy when she was bigger than most of the open bitches! If your puppy matures early and then stops, you will find they do better once you're in junior / graduate / open classes.

Like Sam says if it is a terrier breed that requires spanning and he gets too big to span then yes that would be a problem.  Some terriers however can be leggy without having big chests and that's far more forgivable.  All pups seem to mature at different rates and as others have said here, some pups look huge as puppies but then their peers catch up with them, some pups keep on growing and you wonder when they'll ever stop!  Mine usually have reached their height by about 8-9 months.  If I knew what breed he was (PM if you prefer) I may be able to help further.

most of the height in my breed is reached by 9 months especially the ones that are bigger/well grown, some of the ones that seem small seem to keep going until about 18 months to put on an extra half inch or so.

hi, i spoke to the breeder of the sire at a show at weekend. he basically said the same as lucydogs - not to expect much while he is young and will do well when hes older. my pups breeder rang me last night to see how he got on (chucked out) and was very interested this time! told me she cannot see him until LKA and not to worry at moment.  will let you know what happens. pm'd you merlot.
