OK so last time my lot were poorly you CD'ers were really helpful so I wonder if anyone can help out this time...

Has anyone experienced a sickness bug within their dogs recently? This bug started with my eldest dog on Friday - left her in the house while I nipped out for a few hours. Got back to find about 4 or 5 piles of sick - she had brought her breakfast up and the silver foil thing that goes over the hole on a juice carton? (There must be a technical name but its 5am ) So I put it down to the silver foil...

Then Saturday evening my Cavalier had a chew stick, and it made her really sick, i dont know whether it got stuck in her throat but she was really struggling to swallow, I phoned the emergency vet in a panic, while I was on the phone she was sick and brought up the chew stick. She went out side to eat a load of grass and was fine afterwards - the vets advised me that she should be ok once she had been sick.

Yesterday morning my Mal had the same thing, loads of piles of sick everywhere, was bringing up her breakfast and very down in herself while she was being sick. She is ok now, I have starved her for 24hrs (she is not my friend at the moment!!)

I thought we were all ok but my poor little Cavalier just jumped off the sofa, and was sick a few times, not bringing up anything just bile sick but I am a bit worried now as the last sick had blood in it, so I will ring vets when they open as she seems ok in herself.

My 4 month old pup has not had this. But she has not had these chew sticks either. Am I allowed to say what make they are?! Im seriously thinking they have something dangerous in them - I am going to ring the manufacturer's when they open!! What does anyone think?! Sorry for the essay!

It could be a bug? do you have foxes in your garden? they are all around now looking for food. They do carry a lot of bugs in there poo.

Last year I was given some free samples of one particular kind of dental sticks. Gave it to my Papillons who were used to getting the Pedigree ones regularly. Bobby got really ill with it, sickness, diarrhoea, he was so listless in the car to the vet he was just laying quietly in my arms -he hates travelling due to a bad experience as a pup and normally whines. The vet weighed him and he had lost half a kg which is a lot for such a small dog. The other small Pap had a bit of a dodgy tummy, the bigger one was fine. I'm certain it was the chew stick, and I know Bobby is far more sensitive than the other dogs. The vet agreed.

Tried chew sticks with my oldest Bedlie, made her really sick so haven't bothered buying them since.  I give tripe sticks, Paddywhack, steamed filled bones etc. and they are always fine.  Got given some chew sticks (named brand in a plastic wrapper) at Crufts and they all threw up after them - so never again!

I posted a couple of years ago re a certain dental stick as one of my puppy owners had a dog who had serious stomach problems.  When they told me how many of these they were giving their dog I told them to stop them straight away, took about a week for him to become well again and he's never looked back.

Thanks so much for all your replies. Thankfully mine are all ok now - I have been feeding white fish & rice and tums seem to have settled. I'm fairly certain that it was down to the chew sticks. Just wondering now whether to write a nasty letter to the manufacturers!! Was Bobby OK Marianne after he'd been to the vet? Maybe it affects some dogs worse than others. My poor little Cav seems to have been the worst affected - but thankfully she's full of life now :-)

I've a friend whose dogs have all had a vomitting bug in the last week.  Sadly it's that time of year ... lots of wet, it's been quite warm, this and all the poo that isn't picked up can lead to dogs picking up infections quite easily.  I can think of one particular instance when one of my girls contracted campylobacter, between the vet and myself we decided she'd got some infected poo on her coat whilst out walking (she's not a poo eater), that was expensive, cost me nearly £1,000 :-0 (don't panic, that was tests, vet fees but mainly my loss of earnings cos I then got it and I'm self-employed!!).  It could well be the chews, I'm quite careful about the things I give my dogs.  I've learned that white rawhide chews make them very squitty, and have learned since that they're probably white due to bleaching.  The vegetable chews also make them squitty, but that's probably just due to the vegetable matter as there's nothing artificial in them.
Hope they're all OK by now.

Trialist, thank you :-) I totally agree re time of year. There are so many human infections going round too!!

I have been out today and bought paddywack, tripe sticks, pigs ears and other 'natural' treats - will be checking the ingredients of treats VERY carefully from now on. Thank you to all who replied. The other chews have gone in the bin !!
