Can you please tell me how often these pups should be fed per day and how much. What is the best food at this age? I will be getting a book tomorrw, but please help me out for now.
Thanks

Do you mean that someone has sold you two puppies, not given you any instructions or food to feed them. IMO that is disgusting. Did you know you were getting these pup did you not think of doing something about it before you picked them up?
Tell us what breed and how old and we will be able to help.
I still find the hard to believe how can any one breed puppies and care so little for them.
Jackie

Jackie ..6 week old GSD pups :(
They should be fed 3 or 4 times a day ..small amounts , plenty of clean fresh water available at all times. What sexes are they?
Melody

At only 6 weeks, I would say at leat 4 meals a day, or even five, as it is a little younger than most breeders will let pups go to new homes, and the6y might still have got a bit off Mum had they still been with her.
I do hope you have LOTS OF TIME to train the pups individually, and to ensure that they do not squabble for superiority.
It is unusual for any reputable breeder to sell two pups together, ecept in exceptional circumstances, as it often causes problems, that the new owner is unabla or unwilling to deal with. with pups it mor3e often than not is double trouble.

From the title heading, they seem to be 6 week old GSD pups, Jackie! :(

Have just seen they are 6 weeks old and GSD's do you know what the breeder was feeding them on as you should be kept on that food for a week or so and they will need about 4 meals a doy.
I think the best thing you can do is phone the breeder and ask them the question you have asked us, if you have no luck better come back.

Hi Jackie,
I have not been on for a while, and having just come to look today have been catching up with the posts. I have just been reading your posts and people's replies to them on another thread, where you talk about your tendency to 'jump in at the deep end' - and btw, I don't blame you! - but might this be a person who is either a) out to wind us up or b) a poor person who has gone in for puppy ownership with their eyes firmly closed? Either way, 'don't let the B*****ds grind you down.
Dear Chops,
If this is a genuine question (and apologies if we have offended you if it is genuine, have you asked the breeder of the puppies these questions? If for some reason you can't ask them, please can we have some more details, like age, breed, are they from the same litter as each other, what have they been fed so far....
Reluctant to say more just now as I am frightened of making a fool of myself (again.....)
Linda
took me so long to write this, all the other posts had happened in the meantime! Teach me to start drinking so early on a Friday!

Thought my reply was considered, admit I did not see the title until I had posted a reply and added one. I still think the poster should go back to the breeder because to feed pups this young on something they have not had before could cause bad tummy trouble. If it is a serious post then I have given the best advice I can think of, if not, nothing lost. One can't help but feel sorry for the pups though and angry on their behalf. We all know their are breeder out their who's treatment of the pups they produce is less than adaquate but it does not mean it should be ignored. Jackie

Completely agree with you Jackie.
When I think back to the long process I went through to get Kaiser (aka Kevin the Teenager) and the agonies of doubt about whether I was doing the right thing for him and me, it staggers me how cavalier some people seem about dog ownership. But then I am a little obsessive by nature I think.... Still, it worked for me! He is adorable, and currently has just woken from his post-walk sleep and is politely reminding me that it's time for tea!

Those poor puppies :( :( is'nt it a bit early for them to have left home?

Steve, are you from S/Africa?
I'm not sure how you go about vaccinating puppies there but I presume they will need some sort of vaccinations before being allowed out? That would be my first priority along with vet checks.
I'd go with feeding these puppies at least four small meals a day...add a meal if they seem hungry still....decrease the amount of each meal if they seem full, but keep with little and often. This will make for happier puppies and they tend to be less fretful with frequent meals, especially at this young age! A good quality complete food and plenty of fresh water. It's hard to suggest a brand of kibble not knowing what is sold where you are though, I'd also go with getting back in touch with the breeder to find out what food these pups have been weaned onto....any change on your part could cause upset stomaches.

I am sorry but i agree with you Jackie, I am very shocked that these pups were sent to there new homes with out any instructions. Befor anyone takes one of my pups I make sure they have bought a rotty book and know what they are doing.
This person is in for a big shock, and i do hope they buy a book now. debbie
Hi Chops
I don't know what foods are available in Africa but would assume chicken is freely available. I feed raw, and when my pups were 6 weeks ole(nearly two weeks before I let them go to their new homes) they were on chicken wings or frames (no innards, feathers, legs, wings or breasts), minced chicken carcass and meat with minced veg and fruit, plus other minced meats/tripe/hearts,/liver plus eggs etc.
They should be fed four times a day at this age (until around 12 weeks when it is 3 meals up until around 6 months when it can be reduced to 2 meals a day until either breeding or old age).
As to amount - difficult. Work out how much they will eat at one sitting and then give them a little less for each meal. You don't want pups to grow too fast, but increase the amount every few days.
Raising two pups together frequently does not work - they should be trained and socialised separately. I would not sell two to the same person at the same time as two puppies do not equal twice one puppy. This may not make sense to many people but if you have lived though it, it will:)

When all's said and done they've now got the pups so the way I see it we have no chioce but to help for the sake of the pups:(
Feed them four times a day about 50 grams each feed. Provide fresh water at all times. Reduce the feeds to three meals per day at 6 months old and then two meals at 12 months old. Bear in mind that this is a rough guide and your pup may eat slightly more or less than this.
Worm at 10 weeks and 14 weeks then once a month up to six months old- once a year after this time.
This guide is the amount/what each pup will require. So bear in mind that you have to double this for the two of them. The worming guide is what I did with my GSD bitch but bear in mind I got my bitch at the usual 8 weeks old so I presume she was wormed just before she left the breeder. Good luck and I hope you've got money because each of the wormers, feeds, flea treatment etc etc etc does not come cheap for one let alone two.
