Hello,

I am the owner of a male stafford and female english bull terrier and would love to talk to someone else who owns the same breeds living together. I've always had staffords but this is the first time my partner and me have owned two mixed breed dogs. They are very feisty breeds but I love em. Jake is 5 months old and Lucy is 3 1/2 months old. They do get on very well but do have their moments. Just wanted a chat with someone with good experience of the two together if possible.

Abigale, have you made arrangements for when Lucy comes into season, I'm sure you have, but just incase you have forgotten I would sort it now. Ja:)kie

Don't worry as soon as she is 6months we can have her spade! As much as we love dogs I could never part with any and if she was to have pups we'd end up keeping the whole lot and we can't afford to do that!

Just interested Abigale, but why did you have different sexes knowing that you would have to spay, castrate or kennel when a season was due, not trying to be offensive but would like to understand your reasoning. Ja:)kie

Well, we wanted two dogs and were advised by my local vet that two dogs of the same sex and breed wasn't a good idea.

Well I agree that 2 puppies of the same age is not a good idea and as I dont know about bull breeds I can't comment on them but to say two dogs of the same sex can't live together is total nonsense with most breeds. Have you considered have the male given a vasectomy instead of spaying either of them. Ja:)kie

Hi Jackie,

I know that they say that with most breeds, but having 2 of the same sex in bull breeds is asking for trouble! You have to have eyes in the back of your head, specially 2 males... but 2 females can be equally bad.

And with the vasectomy thing - i know that it means they cannot reproduce, but doesn't it also mean that he will still have all the hormones - still try and mount her, etc???

Yes he will, I supose it depends on if you are prepared to put up with that to have intact animals. You can have a Tardec injection which will usualy help whilst the bitch is in season. There is nothing to say a castrated male will not carry out mounting behaviour too. Oh! I thought there may be a problem with two bull breeds, but don't think vets should generalise or encourage people to have pups so close in age. Ja:)kie

Thanks for that jackie - we are considering that option with solo if the showing doesn't go according to plan - but we also want to eliminate any roaming behaviour!

And i agree competely - even having 2 pups of the opposite sex in bull breeds can lead to problems as they are vying for dominance - i would suggest not leaving them together unattended for any length of time...

Can't speak about bull breeds but I have at the moment two intact males and have had several in the past and have never had one roam or be any more difficult than bitches, what am I talking about bitches are much more difficult. After all we all take care that our dogs don't wander out on to the street which they would all do given the chance, wether or not they have their bits intact, they are just nosy. Ja;)kie

Hi,
I have Bull Terriers and have never had any problems keeping dogs together of the same sex. It all depends on the individual personality of each dog and the amount of time spent with them.
Saying that to the general pet owner I do recommend one of either sex or two bitchs as the best combination.

If you want to find out about Staffs and Bull Terriers why not join a couple of breed clubs?
Not sure about the Staff ones but a list of regional club secs for Bullies can be found at www.bullterriernpbtc.homestead.com/

best wishes

I have had bitches live together no problem and males together and bitches and males together and I think if you are a strong enough leader with them they will be okay. Dont tolerate fighting or even being grumpy with each other. Always repeat your command "no" "bad" etc when you see or hear a grumpy dog.

Thank you for replying... and I do tell them off if they get grumpy with each other, when they were first together it felt like I was telling them off all the time but it is a lot better now! They only seem to squabble in front of us as they are on there own most of the day and they are fine. They are also both great with other dogs. Jake my staffy has grown out of trying to chew our hands but Lucy is terrible. She keeps lunging at your face to bite and lick and is notorious for jumping up and biting our clothes and ripping them. I do tell her off and it has got alot better but she still does it when she is excited. I think this is a bully trait? I think as they get older they will be virtually inseperable.
Anyway thank you
abigail
