Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Appealing KC decision

Has anyone ever taken on an appeal against a KC decision?
To cut a long story short, 9 month old pup put knee out having a bit fun on the beach after a show, during which he won his class.
He had to have it surgically repaired and thinking I was doing the right thing applied to KC for permission to continue showing if the leg mended sufficiently. I finally received letter this week and I am NOT allowed to do so as he is at an unfair advantage from other dogs who have not had surgery! He moved really well prior to the accident and is certainly not any better for having it although I am delighted at how well he has done.
Wish now I had never reported it as many people suggested a the time.

That's terrible, they allow dogs with large hernia's which have been operated on and there since birth but won't let a dog who injures themselves???  Sorry can't offer any advice.

sometimes its best to leave sleeping dogs lie
cant possible see what advantage the K/C think your dog could possible have
often they cant see further than there nose

Did you vet's letter explain it was a definite injury? Pretty certain the KC never accept applications for dogs that have had surgery to fix luxating patellas and their answer about having an advantage over other dogs almost seemed to indicate they had misunderstood the situation?

Well I've heard everything now. I would get a vets letter explaining the accidental injury, making sure he mentioned it was not some hereditary problem he was trying to put right and appeal.

I did have a Vets letter and gave them copy of Critique written on him win just before it happened as it commented on his good movement but to no avail.
Friend who wa swith me is willing to testify what happened if I can appeal but not sure if it is an option.

Personally, I would try to appeal, again sending a letter from the vet who initially saw the dog and the vet which did the op' (if it was another vet' surgeon), and/or any other vets involved, stressing it was done during accidental play, with words to that effect from the vet(s) concerned, with the magic words (or so I've been told) "the operation was carried out for the health and well-being of the dog concerned and NOT for cosmetic reasons" At the end of the day, what do you have to lose? I think it is also a good idea to get your friend to write a letter aswell, another testamony won't hurt. But I would also keep records/copies of what was sent......just in case

However, I find it strange that they say it would put your pup at an advantage, when other procedures get approval (i.e cruciates), is there anyone you can speak to at the KC who can throw more light on the decision?

Can't you show dogs with Cruxiate ligament (sp) repairs?  I think this may all be something to do with "fit for purpose" & how the public would perceive the KC perhaps & yours was bad timing.  I am surprised at the KC though?

What was the actually injury, was it for slipping patella or cruciate ligament rupture/tear, certainly the latter I have seen routinely approved.

It was a luxating patella but due to injury rather than hereditary.
Phoned my vet to tell her the news and she is dumbfounded and was going to speak to KC as she and the sugeon made it clear it was from injury, probably further aggravated due to not being able to operate on him straight away as, due to his age, not enough cartlage had formed and op was put of for six weeks until he had enough.
Have sent away appeal letter but not holding out much hope.

I feel so sorry for you Angela.  Makes you wonder if it's better to be dishonest!

Good luck with your appeal letter
