This is something I saw in another forum and it got me thinking :)

Does anybody have experiences in using sperm that was frozen years ago?
How successful are the inseminations done with "old" sperm or does it make any difference once the stuff has been frozen?
I know of few litters that came about years after the sire had died but is this a rarity as I do hear of many failures too (in using frozen in general, not just ancient stuff)

It could be a very useful tool in the future, to bring back some lines that are lost over the years or just use a boy that is perfect for a bitch that happens to be born 20 years after the male...

well its not really "old" sperm. Its cryopreserved for future use. The post thaw motility rate will differ between sires and species.
Obviously if the sire doesn't have high motility, his post thaw rate will be lower, reducing the chances of a successful insemination.
Cryopreservation is more successful in some animals. Cows for example are commonly inseminated using frozen sperm.
Genetic resource banks (frozen sperm & eggs) are a great asset for not only dogs, but for endangered species.

One lady who has had results is Mrs Tudor of the Camrose Golden Retrievers. She had a dog from way back whose frozen sperm has been used with success. I would be interested to know who does the inseminations for her as my 2 experiences with frozen AI (2 different bitches - 1 maiden & 1 proven, 2 different dogs & 2 different vets) have sadly resulted in no pups!

My bitch had an AI mating on September 2nd with semen from a dog that died a couple of years ago.  She was confirmed in whelp at 28 days.

The success rate is about 80% as opposed to having a normal 2 matings and generally the litters are smaller, but I've heard of a lady in our breed that used AI and had 10 pups so larger litters do happen.

I went to a Vet in Leeds for my AI. 

We had to have blood tests done from day 8 of her season, every day that we had to post to the Vet until she ovulated at day 19 and then we went straight up for the procedure.  This was done trans cervically so my bitch was wide awake, with us stood there with her and she hardly batted an eyelid. This took about 15 mins in total. In rarer cases, they have to have it done by GA if they have no success cervically.
