Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bleeding after mating

My girl was bred just over a week ago. On Friday she began bleeding again - firstly dark red blood, now fresher, red blood. Vet has put her onto antibiotics for a week. She seems fine in herself but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? My boys are still going potty towards her, even though she is now on day 23. I am not getting my hopes up regarding pups as she did miss (to a different, older male, 10 months ago.) Thanks in anticipation.

This happens to all my girls and my vet told me it was perfectly normal, unlike humans when a bitch has been mated they continue their season till the end, even if they are pregnant.  So unless it's an unpleasant smelling discharge, I would just treat it as normal,

No its not unpleasant (thank goodness) There just seems to be lots of it! This is from a bitch that has what I call "wishy washy" seasons and its quite difficult to say when day 1 of her season is. Glad its not just her though!! Thank you!

All bitches are different, and there really isn't a text book pregnancy!

If you believe all you read, then a bitch finishes bleeding, and has "straw colour" discharge - which means she's ready.  Yeah, right.  One of my girls was bleeding all through matings, and quite heavily too.  She carried on bleeding for weeks after the matings.

Whelped on Saturday, no problems.  :-)

My boxers generally bled profusely before-during- and after mating...right through to their natural end of season.
No problems, normal litters.
Time to worry is during pregnancy - a greenish custardy looking discharge or anything smelly occurs.

A few years ago one of my girls bled (quite heavily) all the way through pregnancy, I was certain she had lost the litter, vet put her on Synulox for the whole 9 weeks and she whelped a healthy litter of 7, not the norm I know, but shows it doesn't always end in disaster.

I mated a bitch on the 26th Oct and she is loosing healthy red blood -a few spots on her bedding this morning

After reading your replys I will now relax a bit more and just keep my eye on her.

I have had my Lexi bleed for 32 days from start of her season ans she was mated last on day 17, healthy litter of 7 arrived when expected.  Nearly all mien bleed throughout and the seasons tend to last a bit longer as they got older.

My girl had her scan on Friday to see if she was pregnant. She would have been 27 days. She had been quiet and very picky with her food (not unusual for her) but bright and wanting to go on walks. The bleeding had stopped at the start of the week. The scan showed she had a massive closed pyometra and sadly she has had to be spayed. I feel devastated really as she was the last bitch from my line, not sure what to do now...She is ok though which is the main thing. Things could have been much worse.

I am so sorry.

Could you possibly do what a friend did in this situation contact the owners of the sisters of your bitch and arrange to have a litter from one of them on a loan of bitch agreement, this way you can continue your line.

The thought had vaugely crossed my mind although I know one of them has been spayed the other is still entire. It might be worth emailing to see what they think. Thanks anyway.

Good idea and a way forward for sure.

Good job you went for that scan. Pyo's can be very insidious things can't they and dogs don't always show definate symptoms. I had a bitch with a pyo who was bouncing around, eating, drinking normally etc. All I noticed was that one day she was panting a lot. As it was a couple of months post season I took her to the vet and she had a massive pyo and a temperature of 40 odd. It was a close run thing with her.
