hi please can you tell me how long a pregnancy scan should take at approx 26 days?( scanned early as she had been receptive to the male for 2 weeks and my vet was going on A/L and wanted to scan her)
I may be in denile but we have just had a our bitch scanned this am to be told she MAY have just one puppy.
maybee two "but we will say one" says the locum vet (locum vet did the scan at last minute as my vet was running late into theatre!!)
this confirmation was given in 3-5 minutes of looking - is that ample time?
This will be her 2nd litter adn was scanned later on in last pregnancy
thanks in advance for your comments

I don't remember any scans I've witnessed taking much longer to be honest. But all the ones done by vets have been totally wrong as to numbers -latest one vet said one, maybe two pups and there were ten!

Thank you MarianneB x
I am no sonographer but i could only see one sac ( a white blob on screen) and then what looked to be another one but as he saw it too and though it may be another one he lost it and could not see anymore he breifly went to the other side and after about 30 secs that was it .done come back for a re scan in 7-10 days.
I also did not mention she has started to pass a light pink. brown vaginal discharge and has been put on a 10 day course on Noroclav !!!:( what in your minds could this be? ) an infection or loosing puppies??? I asked the vet to tell me what gestation she was and he was very muffled in his answer and said er yes i think your right about 3 weeks well she is 26 days by the last mating.
so we are back next friday and he is going to be the one repeating the scan as my vet is on A/L ....
would it be obvious to see a mul;tiple pregnancy at this stage?? i have large breed dogs and she is looking big already at 3 weeks :) xx
I go to a lady who was previously a vet nurse with lots of experience of scanning. She will often say as soon as she sees the dog! As soon as she puts probe onto bitch she makes a comment. I have recently taken 2 bitches to her, mine and a friends both mated around same time. Scanned a 28 days'ish - my bitch, she commented on a full bladder and went on to show me several foetus. With the other bitch as soon as the probe was on her - she said she's a bellyful! She said this to me a couple of years ago and we had a litter of 10.
I would be concerned if you could only see a white blob on the screen - I usually see dark blobs that you can often see limbs.
And yes, if it were a multiple pregnancy - you would see many blobs!
I hope all goes well anyway.

my bitch is looking very full in the tummy at 3wks+ 3 days so we thought she was further on than her date by last mating- but if the fetus are only 3 weeks + 3days would we see limbs???
it was definatley a white blob i surrounded by a black area within a large black area which he siad was the bladder at the back..
hmmm i cant beleive she has only 1 as she is filling out quickly ...
Thanks for your thoughts xx

Its my first litter so dont have much experience but when my girl was under the weather around the 23 day mark the vet decided to scan her. It took less than 5 minutes but I could clearly see the round blobs as she moved along. Took her to a sheep scanner at 35 days and it was over in minutes!!! I cant really say I seen a definite shape that time but he very quickly said he thought 9. Shes on day 59 so we should know if hes right soon enough. Also, vet charged £56 and SS was only £15. Might be worth finding out if theres one in your area.
5 minutes about right. As far as blobs are concerned, blobs can represent many things and I think are best left to people skilled at interpreting blobs. Later on it is possible to pick out limbs by the untrained eye, but at 26 days I reckon a blob is a blob! I took my bitch a while ago and a big blob suddenly appeared on the screen, I could have sworn she was having a litter of Labs (she isn't a lab!). I have yet to hear of a Vet who has successfully counted the number of puppies, after all they can be carried high.
What a friend of mine has found, with the last 3 bitches she's had scanned, at 4-41/2 weeks is she's been told there are no pups, only to return the following week for pups to have appeared! Sadly that wasn't the case with my bitch's recent visit, no pups at 4 weeks meant no pups at all :-(

Hello again
Sadly by bitch was scanned today again only to find no pups !!! so we think that she may have had an infection and lost them :(
Really gutted but thanks so much for all your help, time and advice xxxxxx

Aw I am so sorry to hear that, what a terrible shame. :-(
