did anyone else think whitney was pretty awful last night? she kept tripping over her dress which was far too long and then the straps broke at the back! with her fortune surely she could afford something better. i also thought the singing poor- what happened to all those lovely high notes she used to do? then she sounded stoned when spoken too! and to top all that she never had a good word to say for any of the contestents either. i was very dissapointed

What they said!!!!!!!

Just watched it on YouTube, not as bad as I thought considering the way she abused her body for quite some years.  You can blame all the crack she has done over the years for her not being able to reach the high notes.  An enthusiastic performance I thought. Was that a recorded backing?

As for the frock, well the straps looked very tight, no wonder they went twang!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 19.10.09 12:19 UTC
her performance was backed by the record, good job really as she kept missing her notes and she looked like she was either hung over, drunk, or on something, she kept looking at the floor and could hardly string a sentence together

i heard that she has someone in her ear telling her what to say to dermots questions... not sure if this is true, but would explain the pauses!!
- By CVL Date 19.10.09 12:46 UTC
She kept rubbing her nose too... thought she was meant to be clean these days!
- By goldie [gb] Date 19.10.09 14:21 UTC
I was surprised i thought she would have been brilliant...but what a let down, she didnt seem to know what she was supposed to be doing or saying.
- By Blue Date 19.10.09 14:32 UTC
She is still a very attractive woman eh although looks a shade over 46 now. has that " wearing well looking" but thinking in your head she is actually older :-D   Shame so many fall foul to drugs.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 19.10.09 15:06 UTC
Thought they were both rubbish, and yeah, she still looked as though she was on something, though there again it's not surprising after all the years that she took drugs.

Glad I'm not the only one!  I thought I was just being a sourpuss that didn't keep up with the latest songs.

Simon was a total creep, giving out the BS to Cheryl about her performance.  How false can you be?  Neither he or Danni would have given a standing ovation like that if one of the xfactor entrants had given such a performance.

And Whitney was a total disappointment.  How she had the nerve to criticise the entrants, with her performance

That strap was so tight that it looked like a spare tyre peeping out - something had to give!!
- By bear [gb] Date 19.10.09 18:57 UTC
if she's not still on drugs i'd be amazed and her eyes looked like piss holes in the snow as if she's been drinking or doing something before she came on.
i thought she was rude and her performance was pretty crap, especially if you think how good she was in her prime.
all in all i don't think she did herself any justice what so ever after that performance.
- By CVL Date 19.10.09 19:20 UTC
Completely agree... it's sad when Jon and Edward are the best entertainment of the night :-D :-D  just kidding, but at least they are amusing... Still can't stop watching though!!

As I have already posted on here that I am going to see Whitney in April I will keep my opinion to myself until then, I have adored Whitney Houston's music for years she was always my most favorite performer I play her albums all the time,  very old, old  and even new no-one could compare . BUT I have to also say the life she lead in the later years dissapointed and upset me so much I still played her albums but never had any interest in her as such for a good few years.

I never in my widest dreams ever though I would  get to see her live I cant believe it (my son bought me the tickets) good or bad I am still thrilled that I will be there.

I wasnt that dissapointed to be honest on Sunday she may have lost  her looks somwhat who hasnt I am sure she planned for her dress to malfunction...  right..and think she handled it well what else could she do, didnt like her outfit but so what..who really cares.. she can still sing maybe not as she could all those years ago ..but when does live ever sound like the recorded albums .
I think lots of people want her to fail typical of us brits !!

Now if you were talking about the ridiculous  Cheryl Cole and the 500 men dancers on stage to cover her rubbish 'mimed' performance I would have plenty to say about that!!!! crap record crap singer and sheeee is commenting on the contestants....blimey o'riley

Witney looked like the amatuer, and looked off her trolley!
- By ClaireyS Date 19.10.09 19:34 UTC
I dont think Cheryl was miming, I think she was supposed to be but there was such a backlash she was forced to do it live ....... I thought it was good - I sang it all the way round my evening run tonight (in my head of course ;)  )

I was disappointed with Witney.
- By CVL Date 19.10.09 19:39 UTC
I watched pretty carefully (I'm very sad, I know)... think she sang the first verse live, with a very loud backing track and was miming a pre-recorded version, not just the straight single, after that... she did forget to move her mouth once or twice with all that 'dancing'. The song is horribly catchy though, I've been singing it all day!
- By allaboutme_79 Date 19.10.09 19:54 UTC
It was kinda live but was pre recorded using the audience from last weeks live show....apparently it took her quite a few times to get it right.

I think we are all being too hard on the artists, it's got to be the worst  and most nerve-wracking show for any of them to ever be on, many artists nerves have got the better of them on this show because it is a critical show where everyone critiques the contestants/artists from the moment they step on the stage, it's not like singing at a gig, when you know people have come to see you because they love you, that builds confidence, not like X factor where people will be looking for comparisons and faults, it goes with the territory of this show.

So far there has only been one proffessional artist who has smashed their performance and that was Alexandra Burke, she did really well with little nerves, probably because this was her launch pad for her career, she'd won the show and felt the support already there.

Unlike Cheryl, Robbie and Whitney who had a lot to prove the pressure must have been enormous for all of them. I really think you can only come across well on that show if you are in a happy and secure place so the nerves don't get to you.

Robbie, (I don't like his song) re-launched his career with a song which isn't a ballad, isn't a dance song, there isn't really much to it to show any talent, IMO it was a hard song to sing in public, hence the adlibbing, it's been a very long, long, long time since he has performed with no drugs/alchohol to stay his nerves, he was at his rawest and most exposed than he has ever been, Robbie has been criticised continually for his performance, what do people want, him back on drugs, or to have his confidence built wherein he can go back on stage with no drugs at all. He is probably more nervous than ever about singing without something to calm him, and the media have slated his performance, he'll be back on drugs in no time no doubt, well done to the media. **rolleyes**

Whitney, (I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she too is off drugs  ) may well have also been nervous, her wardrobe, I dare say she will be sacking someone  not her fault at all, terrible thing to happen, but again as with Robbie she had sooooo... much to prove, can she not be human and find the whole thing nerve-wracking too, it's just not like a gig for them and nothing like a finished single and video.

Cheryl is no diva, she doesn't have a strong voice, but not many do in the charts today, again the knives were out for a good week, before she even did her turn, I sometimes wonder what we want from people.  I take my hat off to her to even get up and perform on that show at all. I'm glad that Simon praised her afterwards, we all saw the relief in her face.

Truth is not many artists sound like they do on their records when live, there are only a few who can sing note perfect without all the technology. I think we should give them a break.

Happy note:  Jamie was fabulous on Saturday, beautiful take on that song, he's my absolute favourite now. :-)

I went to see her back in around 1992 and although I like her the concert was not great she sung about 6 songs, 6 dress changes and I was not pleased. Still liked her at the time though. Just didn't think even then she worked the live performance.

Well JeanSW you can definitely call me a sourpuss, I wont be offended. I tried to watch this program & after the first 10 minutes of hype & no performers (well it seemed that long) I left the others to it & went upstairs to watch Last Of The Summer Wine that I'd saved on Sky+. Much more entertaining!
Talking of Whitney's dress, Katie Price was on Graham Norton's show last night, flippin heck how she never 'busted' out of her dress I'll never know, & she had to sit up dead straight & not move. She said she was wearing 3 pairs of false eyelashes, that wouldn't work for me in a doggy household, but I could sweep up enough dog hair to make her 3 false hairpieces.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 20.10.09 15:23 UTC
Oh come on it's not that hard, it's one song and I can believe it took Cheryl so many takes I think she's the Victoria Beckham of Girls Aloud, not a great singer etc.  Can't believe that the single is going to be the biggest seller this year.  Song is catchy I suppose but her voice is rubbish.

> How she had the nerve to criticise the entrants, with her performance

When you're Whitney Houston you have the right!!

> That strap was so tight that it looked like a spare tyre peeping out - something had to give!!

Well if my figure was that bad when I was 40 plus I'd be happy :) bad straps or not.

Her pitch of notes was perfect and her key was right but yes her voice has lost some of the clarity of tone, but wouldn't yours after it had been through a Bobby Brown phase?

Yes she did look a little wobbly but I'd like to bet she was as nervous as hell as she had a lot to prove, at least she sung live unlike the so beautiful Cheryl that had to be recorded over and over and over again till it looked and sounded half decent.
