How did you make her sick (just wandering :) )
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 29.11.02 07:43 UTC
Dogs you can use mustard mixed with water or a nugget of washing soda, if you use soda make sure it is not so big it could choak on the way down or back. Anybody have other methods.

Hi Jackie, I keep Ipecac syrup in the dog first aid box. You can also use diluted hydrogen peroxide (about 1:10) or a saturated salt water solution. In the past I'd have used the salt solution in an emergecy but a few years ago a friend's Golden died after stealing ling (dried & salted fish) that had been hung out on the washing line to dry :-(.

I'll vouch for hydrogen peroxide working (on me, at least!). The hospital made me gargle with it after I had a quinsy. It wasn't supposed to but it worked every time!:(

Thanks Sharon, can I get Ipecac from a chemist or do I have to get it from the vet. It is becoming very hard to get soda now it's all in granuals.

Hi Jackie, I honestly don't know if you can get it over the counter. I suspect not because it is abused by bulimics. My BNF & Mimms seem to have vanished into the morass of books and papers so I can't check, but when one of them floats back to the top of the mess I call home I'll let you know.

Thanks. Do have tame people who know about human medicine so I could ask them. Ja:)kie

Hi Sharon

My most recent BNF is 9.95 - would what you want to look up be in there?

Hi Christine, is Ipecac syrup GSL, P or POM for Jackie?
- By Kerioak Date 29.11.02 17:35 UTC
Hi Sharon

Does not say, maybe more up to date BNF would?

Ipecacuaha Emetic Mixture, Paediatric (BP) = in strenth to Ipecac Syrup USP

Side Effects: Excessive vomiting and mucosal damage: cardiac effects if absorbed.

Having read the cautions there is no way I would give this to one of my dogs!

Thanks for looking Christine. There is a risk to very small children (and I imagine small pups) but an adult would have to drink a lot of the Ipecac before getting those problems and since its an emetic they would probably throw up before getting enough down. Its a bit like the old saw about valium - the only way to commit suicide with valium is to choke on the tablets :). But if your dog has just eaten something very toxic the risk of side effects is pretty academic.

When my sons working sheepdog accidently got hold of rat poison. I rang the vet on call who suggested ordinary washing powder, she said push a tablespoon full to the back of her throat.

Wow did it work! Everything in her stomach immediately came back including the blue poison.

So in an emergency grab the Daz or Persil box :-)

Gosh thats caustik, supose it's OK but that would worry me more than the poison. At least with soda it was in a lump and came back up, but powder I would worry about some being left down there. Ja:)kie

Saved her life though Jackie, and honestly it only touched the back of her throat before it made her retch.
