Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Naive person's colour question

Not sure if this is the right board - still finding my way round - but here goes!

When we got our GR in 1997, she was registered as "Dark Golden" (most definitely in a minority!). Her paler siblings were registered as "Light Golden". I have noticed in recent KCBRS's that all GRs appear to be registered as "Golden", "Gold" or "Cream". Is this due to a tightening-up by the KC?

I can see the logic behind it, as "Dark" and "Light" are very subjective - one person's "Golden" may be another person's "Dark Golden" I suppose. I just wondered if this was coincidence or imposed by KC. I must confess I used to enjoy looking for other "Dark Golden"s as there were always so few. Personally I would have classed Bracken as "Golden" - she was nowhere near the colour of some of the older, working lines of GRs, she just happened to be the darkest in her litter.

Sorry for my naivety, but I never bred or showed so am not up-to-date with changes to registration.

Owning a breed that is gray and only called gray silver or black tips, well thats what the standard says, I'm not sure. Seem to have heard that the KC have tightened up on colour descriptions, not sure if it was announced or if they just change the colour the breeder put to something that suits the KC. Not GR but some breeds did started to have some very imaginative decriptions of colour, you know the sort of thing that tells you nothing about the actual colour. Ja:)kie

Hi, I'll dig out Sunny's registration and have a look (we lost her to cancer in June) I'm sure she was reg. as just 'Golden' but cant remember - that was 3 years ago, so not that long ago - maybe they have changed though - The only problem I can see with registering a 'shade' of golden is that the pups darken up as they get older, so one that is maybe pale could darken up to medium as they mature - Sunny darkened a little ,to roughly the same colour that her ears were when we first got her (if that makes sense - her ears were darker than her body as a tiny pup) she was still very pale though - Hmmmm this colour thing really interests me, there have been a few good questions regarding colour genetics lately - Julie :)
