Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Possible budding recall 'issue'?

My working cocker is nearly 14 weeks and recalls wonderfully in the house instantly.  From the garden she will recall first time probably 75% time, the other times she will just sit at the bottom of the garden and look at me.  On those occasions I shut the door and walk away, then go back and call her and she comes flying in.  Whenever I call her she always gets a fuss, treat or play.
The garden recall is bothering me slightly and now she is out and about for walks I am reluctant to let her off the lead.  I have done on a few occasions and she has come back to me but run around me rather than coming straight to me.  I always take her favourite toy and some cooked chicken out with me but she shows no interest in either while she is out and will not eat at all.  I'm now walking her on a long line and recalling her frequently and pulling her in if she doesn't come.  I always praise her once she gets to me and put my hand on her collar before giving her a release word.
I think I am worrying prematurely and the puppy fascination with the world is overuling her interest in me but I want to nip this in the bud early!

If you can find somewhere to walk her with lots of trees etc you can hide and she will be only too keen to find you. Helps a lot with recall with a pup who is not food/toy orientated. Just make sure you can always see her but that she can hear you but not see you immediatly. Most baby pups will come like a shot if they think you are going to "disapear"

Sounds like you might be calling her TOO much. When it comes to coming in from the garden, I never, ever call my dogs. I open the door and wait quietly, and if they don't appear (and all puppies seem to go through that stage :) ) I shut the door again. Even though you release her again during walks, you're giving her the impression that MOST of the time, a recall means that the fun stops. Also being forced to come if she doesn't by being pulled in, it will all add to it, so try to NOT call her unless you are fairly sure she WILL come -otherwise she will learn she doesn't have to or will be forced. (A GREAT time to call is of course when dinner is about to be served to her!) Have her off lead but run away from her a lot, in the opposite direction, run and hide, be unpredictable.

An aid to garden recall is to keep a box of treats by the back door - invaluable for scooping a few on the way past, to reward weeing etc on command, but also great to reward coming back inside.

Whenever your pup comes in the door, shut it gently behind her then shake the box before giving her a treat and some praise or a play time.  You may soon find that if you shake the box she'll come back indoors whether you've called her or not.  The advantage of this is that there is no 'fail', she isn't responding to an instruction but a stumulus (Pavlov's Dog).

Mine are 6 and 2 and I still reward them for coming indoors! This means they come immediately they've been asked which is handy when I want to avoid a barking problem with my mongrel :)

My basic treats are the small bits of kibble from a pack of Pedigree Better By Nature, they are handy for pockets and house treats and they make a good rattle.  I buy a small bag which lasts me forever.

Hi, my spinone was terrible for this so I phoned a gundog trainer with spinone experience.  This it what I was told to do.  Recall, wait for return, if no return, hide and then recall once.  Wait patiently and quietly, when the sudden realisation is that you are no longer about the dog should panic.  When you see this recall once and let the dog find you.  No treat or praise this time but when you recall next time and it is instant praise loads.  I had only to do this once and I have never had a problem since.  I guess you have a whistle?
