DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO HELP AN OLD POODLE. SHE IS 10. i'VE ONLY HAD HER A YEAR GOT HER FROM THE HUMAN SOCIETY. SHE IS IN EXTREME PAIN SHE CAN BARELY WALK. THE VET SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE. AT HER AGE SURGURY IS NOT AN OPTION. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. SHE IS IN HORRIBLE PAIN. THE VET OFFERS ME NO OPTIONS. I AM THINKING THAT I SHOULD PUT HER DOWN. I DON'T WANT TO. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGESTIONS ON HOW I CAN CARE FOR HER TO MAKE HER LIFE MORE COMFORTABLE.
THANK YOU

How sad for you. If all is as you say - then I am surprised your vet hasn't been a bit more helpful in making suggestions to you.

Have they recommended any pain relief for her? What is actually wrong with her? If you cannot get this information from your vet - then I would look to another vet for advice and an opinion. It could be that she has arthritis which could be eased by drugs, it could be something for which there is nothing more to be done. Before you decide to have her put to sleep though, you need the full information.

It can be so hard when our animals are suffering, but please be firm with your vet in making them tell you exactly what the problem, ie dignosis, is and then what treatment is possible and what the prognosis is.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE. I'M SORRY I DIDN'T EXPLAIN MORE CLEARLY I'M JUST SO UPSET I'M NOT THINKING CLEARLY. HER KNEE JOINT IS WORN OUT AND EVERY TIME THE VET TRIED TO PUT IT BACK IT WOULD POP BACK OUT. THEY DID GIVE ME SOMETHING FOR PAIN AND A VITAMIN BUT THEY ARE NOT WORKING. THEY ONLY TIME SHE GETS UP IS TO GO TO THE BATHROOM. I WOULDN'T MIND I WOULD CARRY HER EVERYWHERE IT'S JUST THAT SHE WHIPMERS AND CRYS ALL THE TIME EVEN IN HER SLEEP I WAS THINKING ABOUT AMPUTATION DOGS CAN LIVE HAPPY HEALTH LIVES WITH JUST 3 LEGS BUT NOW HER OTHER HIND LEG IS STARTING TO GIVE WAY SO I DOUBT THAT IS AN OPTION EITHER. SHE IS HEALTHY EXCEPT FOR THIS. MY HEART IS BREAKING BUT I'M RUNNING OUT OF CHOICES.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR RESPONSE. HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Welcome to the forum Dianne & happy thanksgiving :-)

I am very sorry to hear about your dog and it must be very distressing for you and her but, if it was my dog and she was in that much pain and getting worse, then I personally, would not be prolonging her agony. If she is in constant pain then her quality of life must be as good as nil. I can not see how it is in *her* interests either to amputate a leg at 10 years of age :-( Sometimes the greatest kindness, is to let them go. Not an easy decision I know. Good luck with whatever you decide.

NB: Please take your CAPS LOCK off. It makes your posts very hard to read

Sorry about the cap lock Thank you for your feedback I think I knew that to allow this to go on any longer would only be selfish on my part. I don't want to loose her but I Love her to much to allow this to go on any longer. I will take her tomorrow. Thank you I think I just needed to hear somebody else say that it is what is best for her. I am trying to be grateful for the year I had. she was scheduled to be put down when I took her. Nobody wanted to adopt an old dog. Even though it was short I am happy to have had her she was the best behaved pet I ever had. Again I want to thank you all for your help in making this decision.

Dianne,
Hard as it will be for you I think you will be doing the right thing for your girl, esp if her other leg is starting to give out. I can imagine how you feel as I have an old lass of nearly 13 and every day is precious.
My Una sends {{{{{ hugs}}}} and mouse kisses to you both,
Anne

Hi Dianne, agree with Leigh that if poor Bobbie has uncontrollable pain it would be kinder to let her go. The only other suggestion is to ask for a referral to an orthopaedic specialist before you make a final decision.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will let you know the results.

Dianne

Thanks for the Thanksgiving good wishes. Perhaps it is a good point for you to consider - you have the opportunity to put an end to your girls suffering. If nothing more can be done to ease her pain - then you have the gift that she will give you thanks for - the abilty to end her suffering. This is the hardest decision any loving pet owner has to face because while easing her pain - you will be causing yourself so much more. Your pain will ease with time - hers will only get worse. She can't understand her pain - you can yours. You will always have your memories and you can feel proud that you have given her a wonderful home for that last year of her life.

I truly feel for you.

Thank you but I can't imagine it being more painful than watching her suffer so. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the support I am recieving from everybody.

Hi Dianne, please try and be brave for your girl. It's a horrible decision that you have to make right now but you must do what is best for her. Only you can make that final decision the vet will not make your mind up for you. You need to consider her age and quality of life now and the pain and suffering she is in.

Im sorry I can't be of anymore help to you right now it must be awful for you.

Best wishes

I'm so sorry that you have to make the decision that lies ahead - but think of this: thanks to you Bobbie has known nothing but LOVE for the last year of her life - and that is all thanks to you.

Love

Thank you you have been a great help. Just hearing others that believe it is the right thing is giving me the courage I need to do this.

If you do decide to have her put to sleep, you now have the time to prepare. You could take her to one of her favourite places so she could have a look about and remember how things were. And then you could have the vet come to your house, sedate her and then put her to sleep.

This way you would have done everything you could, to know that she was at the end of her pain and misery and that she'd had a good last day.

If only we could all go out that way.

Best of luck with your difficult decision.

Thank you so much. It never dawned on me to have the vet come to my house. That would be so much better for her. She always hated going to the vet. I will most definatly investigate that option it would be so nice if she could go in the comfort and safety of her own home. Thank you soooo much.
