could anyone recomend a course ?
I am considering the animal care college, intermediate canine psychology.
There are so many on the market at the moment, it is hard to know which one to "go" for as it were.
I have had a look at the Compass basic canine psychology, but i was wondering if anyone has done a course , how they found it to be, how much back up they recieved from a course tutor & how hard was it to complete. What realisticly (sp) they could then do once they had finnished the course & what they could then use that knowledge for ?
Sorry there are so many questions but i am eager to find "the right one" to suit me.
Many thanks in advance

It would be helpful if you registered, which is free, or gave an email address, so that the board members can help you.
Do you know what you would like to be doing after whatever course you take? What are you aiming for?

Hi Lynn , i have registered but it has taken me up until today to figure out how to log in --- hence the name scatty--- lol. I am hoping to do a course just for myself but i was just wondering what the outcome would be if/when i do one & which one it is.
I think i will introduce myself while i'm here.
My nik name is scatty because i am !! i have 2 kids a boy & a girl & a 5month old puppy.
i hope someone out there can give me some idea's about courses as it has now become mind boggling looking at them all & trying to decide on one is now even harder.
Many thanks

Thank you for the links leigh, i have had a look at the coape courses, but had'nt had a look at the apbc ones.
I was just wondering if anyone on this list had done a course like these & what they thought about it.
I am being tight, as i dont want to pay out for a course that doesnt live up to what it says so to speak, so this is why i was asking if anyone had done one ........ to find out thier thoughts on it.
Many thanks once again

HI
I'll give you mu input, for what it's worth :)
I've done the old Canine Human Interface, which was written by John Fisher. It has now been adapted and updated by Sarah Whitehead, (who was his associate if thats the right word) and called the Think Dog! course. I did it with the ACC and had Pam Mackinnon as my tutor.
It wasn't easy to phone her at the times allowed, but she was helpful in her written suggestions and supportive. The course was very thought provoking and very much geared towards thinking dog, but what I liked about it was that you had to do practical stuff -and watch lots of different dog clubs at work, compare training methods, and talk to people. I also attached myself to several behaviourists, some good, some not so good, and that was an eyeopener. It helped to see just how you had to be a "people" person as much as a dog person :) ;) and the need for thinking on your feet, something i am not too good at.
It's also so helpful to be able to put into practical application what you have learned, this was the best bit for me. There is, or was, a little bit at the start saying that the course will not make anyone an "instant" behaviourist, and to remember it is just a step on the ladder, so to speak.
I guess it was maybe, O level standard....yes Ok I'm shownig my age LOL!
The ACC does have some very good tutors including Barry Eaton, who trains deaf dogs.
I have also done another course with COAPE, with Sarah Whitehead as my tutor, and have to say I have nothing but praise for her, she will speak on the phone and help if she can. I like the fact that they pose questions to make one think, rather than just give the answers.
To be honest, I feel each course is just a stepping stone, and it is really what you make it. I did learn a lot, and am still learning :) but it is so important to get that practical hands on experience, too :) a lot depends on what you want to learn andwhat you already know, too IMHO :)
There is a course held at Bishop Burton College, by correspondence, but you attend on some days and have instruction by Angela White. There's also one at Southampton which is pretty advanced and you have to attend a few days a week I think, not sure though.
HTH a bit,
Lindsay
