An animal can travel abroad several weeks after the rabies vaccination, but can't return until at least 7 months after.
The process goes like this:
The animal is microchipped, then given a rabies vaccination. (The microchip can vaccination can take place at the same consultation, but the chip
must be implanted first). Three or four weeks later (depending on the vaccine manufacturer's recommendation) a blood sample is taken from the animal and sent away to be tested. If the sample shows a high enough level of antibodies then the vet will recheck the animal's microchip and issue the pet passport; the animal can then travel abroad, but can't return to the UK until 6 months have passed
from the date the blood sample was taken.
